Amazing Lost Footage from Paris Show

This is a pretty interesting one for George Michael fans because this isn’t simply an old concert being dusted off and slapped onto a movie screen. George Michael: The Faith Tour is built around recently rediscovered, previously unseen footage from Michael’s legendary 1988 Faith Tour.

The film is scheduled for North American theaters on December 11th, 2026, with screenings planned in both standard theaters and IMAX where available.

The footage comes from two nights at the Palais Omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris in 1988, when Michael was just 24 years old and riding the enormous success of his first solo album, Faith. It was originally shot using 14 cameras on 35mm film, giving the filmmakers a substantial amount of professional concert footage to work with. The material has now been restored and remastered for the theatrical presentation.

And this is probably the biggest selling point: the footage was essentially lost for decades. What audiences are getting is a newly assembled concert film made from material that hasn’t previously been released publicly in this form. It captures Michael during the period when he was transitioning from being one-half of Wham! into becoming one of the biggest solo artists on the planet.

What Will Be in the Movie?

The concert footage is the centerpiece, but the movie also includes additional material designed to put the Faith era into context.

It opens with “Finding Faith,” an original short film directed by Mary McCartney, featuring newly discovered audio and imagery from 1986-1988. It includes an unheard interview with Michael, unseen photographs by legendary photographer Herb Ritts, and behind-the-scenes material connected to the making of the Faith music video.

The main concert film was directed by Andy Morahan and David Austin, longtime collaborators of Michael. Morahan directed several of Michael’s major music videos, including Faith, Careless Whisper and Last Christmas.

The Faith Era Was Huge

Michael’s Faith album had been released in 1987 and turned him into a bona fide solo superstar. The accompanying tour ultimately consisted of 109 concerts across 16 countries, making it a massive international production.

The Paris performances therefore come from a particularly important point in his career. Michael wasn’t yet the older, more reflective performer audiences would know from his later years. This is young George Michael, at the absolute height of the Faith phenomenon, performing in the enormous leap from Wham! superstar to solo icon.

And because the footage was filmed on 35mm with 14 cameras, this isn’t somebody’s shaky VHS recording from the cheap seats. Humanity occasionally got something right.

There’s an Album Coming, Too

The theatrical release is being accompanied by an 18-track live album, also called The Faith Tour. Sony Music says it will contain previously unreleased live recordings from the tour, including material from both Michael’s solo career and his Wham! years.

The album is scheduled for release November 6, 2026, ahead of the movie’s North American theatrical release. It will be available on CD, vinyl, a limited-edition picture disc and a deluxe box set containing previously unseen photographs.

There is also some conflicting information floating around online about the exact theatrical timing. Some databases currently list earlier dates, but Sony Music’s September 2nd announcement gives December 11th as the North American cinema release, and current U.S. theater listings such as Fandango reflect that date.

Nearly 40 years after George Michael took the Faith Tour around the world, previously unseen footage from the tour is finally getting the big-screen treatment. And unlike a conventional documentary, audiences are essentially getting a front-row seat to George Michael at 24, right when his solo career was exploding.
