The latest chapter of the Battle of Florida turned physical early and decisive late, as the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Florida Panthers 6–1 on Thursday night in the final game for both teams before the Olympic break.
Tampa Bay leaned on stellar goaltending from Andrei Vasilevskiy, who stopped 33 shots and continued his remarkable run of form. The veteran netminder improved to 16-0-1 in his last 17 appearances, anchoring a Lightning team that has surged to 19-1-1 over its past 21 games.
Six different Lightning players found the back of the net in a balanced offensive performance. Brandon Hagel, Oliver Bjorkstrand, Jake Guentzel, Erik Cernak, Pontus Holmberg, and Zemgus Girgensons — all set to participate in the upcoming Olympic Games — scored for Tampa Bay. Meanwhile, Nikita Kucherov extended his scoring streak to 10 games, marking the 13th double-digit scoring streak of his career, tied for fifth-most in NHL history.
The Lightning wasted little time taking control. Hagel opened the scoring just 2:08 into the first period, tipping a shot from Victor Hedman. Girgensons doubled the lead late in the opening frame, cleaning up a scramble in front of the net. After Matthew Tkachuk was assessed an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty at the end of the period, Guentzel capitalized early in the second to make it 3–0. Cernak added his first goal of the season on a wraparound late in the period, pushing the advantage to four.
Tempers boiled over once Tampa Bay built its commanding lead. The rivalry escalated in the third period after Tkachuk delivered a hit from behind on Kucherov during a delayed penalty. A large scrum followed, highlighted by Tkachuk and Hagel dropping the gloves at 4:06 of the third period. All 11 skaters on the ice received penalties, and Panthers coach Paul Maurice was ejected. The teams combined for 137 penalty minutes, continuing a trend of heated matchups after they recorded more than 300 penalty minutes in a preseason meeting in October.
Holmberg extended Tampa Bay’s lead to 5–0 early in the third period before Mackie Samoskevich scored a power-play goal for Florida to spoil the shutout. Bjorkstrand capped the scoring with 4:19 remaining.
Florida’s goaltending situation became complicated late in the game. Danil Tarasov made 20 saves before leaving with an injury in the third period, forcing Sergei Bobrovsky to finish the contest. The Panthers were also shorthanded, resting Brad Marchand, Aaron Ekblad, and Evan Rodrigues after playing the previous night in Boston.
With the victory, Tampa Bay heads into the Olympic break as one of the NHL’s hottest teams, riding momentum fueled by elite goaltending, balanced scoring, and growing intensity in its rivalry with Florida.
The Panthers host the Toronto Maple Leafs on Feb. 26, while the Lightning host Toronto on Feb. 25 when NHL play resumes.
