Lunar Eclipse
A partial lunar eclipse transformed the moon into a deep reddish hue overnight as Earth’s shadow covered nearly the entire visible face of the moon, creating a striking celestial display across much of North America.
Skywatchers who were awake late Thursday night and into Friday morning were treated to one of the more dramatic lunar eclipses in recent years. As the eclipse progressed, the moon gradually disappeared into Earth’s shadow, with only a small portion of its surface remaining outside the darkest part of the shadow near the peak.
The event was visible from much of North America, although exactly how much of the eclipse people could see depended on their location, local weather conditions and the moon’s position in the sky.
The Moon Turned Red
The reddish appearance is a natural result of sunlight passing through Earth’s atmosphere.
During a lunar eclipse, Earth moves between the sun and the moon. The planet blocks direct sunlight from reaching the lunar surface, but some sunlight bends through Earth’s atmosphere and continues toward the moon.
Earth’s atmosphere scatters shorter blue wavelengths of light more strongly while allowing more red and orange wavelengths to pass through. That remaining light can illuminate the moon with a copper, orange or deep red color.
The phenomenon is sometimes referred to as a “blood moon,” although the astronomical event itself is a lunar eclipse.
Nearly The Entire Moon Was Covered
While the eclipse was classified as a partial lunar eclipse, it was an unusually deep one.
Earth’s darkest central shadow, called the umbra, covered nearly the entire visible face of the moon. That left only a relatively small section of the lunar disk outside the deepest shadow at the height of the event.
The distinction between a partial and total lunar eclipse comes down to whether the entire moon enters the umbra. Because a small portion remained outside it, the eclipse remained officially partial despite its dramatic appearance.
Why Lunar Eclipses Are Safe To Watch
Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses can be viewed safely with the naked eye. There is no need for specialized eclipse glasses because viewers are looking at the moon rather than directly at the sun.
Binoculars and telescopes can also make the event more impressive, allowing observers to see Earth’s shadow move across the moon and revealing details on the lunar surface.
A Reminder Of The Scale Of Our Solar System
Lunar eclipses are more than an unusual nighttime spectacle. They are a visible demonstration of the precise alignment between the sun, Earth and moon.
The moon orbits Earth continuously, but its orbit is tilted slightly relative to Earth’s path around the sun. That is why a lunar eclipse does not happen every month. An eclipse occurs when the three bodies line up closely enough for Earth to cast its shadow onto the moon.
For millions of people across North America, that alignment produced a memorable sight overnight as the normally bright full moon became increasingly dark before glowing red against the night sky.
