Fleet Week 2025
One of New York City’s most beloved traditions returned with full fanfare this morning as the Parade of Ships sailed majestically up the Hudson River, marking the official start of Fleet Week 2025. Thousands of onlookers, from tourists and veterans to schoolchildren and lifelong New Yorkers, gathered along the waterfront to witness the arrival of U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard vessels in a proud and stirring procession.
As the ships passed landmarks like the Statue of Liberty and One World Trade Center, sailors in crisp white uniforms lined the decks and offered salutes, while fireboats sprayed festive red, white, and blue water jets into the air. It was a powerful display of tradition, patriotism, and the enduring bond between the military and New York City.
This year’s fleet includes several major warships, among them the USS Bataan, an amphibious assault ship capable of launching helicopters and landing craft; the USS Mason, a guided-missile destroyer; and multiple Coast Guard cutters. Naval vessels from allied nations, including Canada and the United Kingdom, are also participating in this year’s Fleet Week, reinforcing international cooperation and maritime unity.
The ships will be docked at various piers across Manhattan, Staten Island, and Brooklyn, with many open to the public for tours throughout the week. Visitors will have the opportunity to explore the ships, meet active-duty sailors and Marines, and gain firsthand insight into life at sea and the operations of the U.S. armed forces.
Rear Admiral Joanna M. Nunan, Commander of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic, emphasized the importance of community engagement. “Fleet Week is more than a celebration — it’s a chance for the people of New York to meet the men and women who serve our country, to hear their stories, and to honor their sacrifice,” she said at the opening ceremony near Pier 86, home of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.
Mayor Eric Adams also welcomed the fleet, calling it a cherished rite of spring. “Fleet Week reminds us that New York City stands strong because we are protected by the brave,” Adams said. “This week is a chance to show our appreciation for their service, and to share the best of our city with them in return.”

Fleet Week in Pop Culture
Fleet Week has long been part of the cultural fabric of New York City. In addition to its real-life impact, it has made memorable appearances on screen — most notably in the hit HBO series Sex and the City.
In the season five premiere, titled “Anchors Away”, Carrie Bradshaw and her glamorous crew encounter sailors visiting the city for Fleet Week. The episode, known for its flirty tone and signature fashion, portrays Fleet Week as a moment when the city becomes just a little more romantic — and unpredictable.
“You can’t swing a Fendi purse without knocking over a sailor,” quips Samantha Jones, highlighting the festive energy and city-wide excitement that Fleet Week brings. The episode helped solidify the event as not just a military tradition, but a celebrated piece of New York’s social and cultural calendar.
A Living Tribute
As Fleet Week 2025 unfolds, the Parade of Ships serves as both a show of strength and a gesture of gratitude — a powerful reminder of the nation’s maritime heritage and the daily commitment of service members around the world.
Whether you’re exploring a guided-missile destroyer, enjoying a Navy band concert in Central Park, or simply thanking a sailor on the street, Fleet Week offers an unforgettable opportunity to celebrate courage, service, and the spirit of New York City.
