Historic Performances at the 2024 Paris Olympics: Women’s Balance Beam and Floor Exercise Finals

The 2024 Paris Olympics has seen some thrilling moments in gymnastics, with standout performances in the Women’s Balance Beam and Floor Exercise Finals. Italy’s Alice D’Amato added a golden chapter to her Paris medal collection, winning the gold medal on the balance beam. This victory comes on the heels of her historic team silver medal, marking her as a significant figure in Italian gymnastics history.

The Balance Beam Final began with an unexpected turn when Zhou Yaqin of China, the top qualifier, faced an early setback. Zhou, who was the first athlete to compete, touched her hands down on the beam after a full straight jump, resulting in a five-tenth deduction and scoring 14.100. This mishap opened the door for Alice D’Amato, who seized the opportunity with an impressive routine. D’Amato’s performance earned her a score of 14.366, making her the first Olympic gold medalist for Italy in women’s gymnastics.

Zhou Yaqin secured the silver medal, while D’Amato’s teammate, Manila Esposito, the 2024 European balance beam champion, captured the bronze with a score of 14.000. It was a disappointing day for the American gymnasts. Simone Biles, who was second after qualifications, encountered difficulties during her acrobatic series and finished fifth with a score of 13.100. Suni Lee, who had expressed a strong desire to win gold on the balance beam, also fell during her acrobatic series, placing sixth with the same score of 13.100.

The Women’s Floor Exercise Final saw Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade achieve a career milestone by winning her first Olympic gold medal on floor exercise. Andrade’s stunning performance dethroned the seven-time Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, who finished second. This victory added to Andrade’s impressive collection, bringing her total to six Olympic medals and making her the most decorated Brazilian Olympian in history, surpassing sailors Robert Scheidt and Torben Grael.

In a dramatic turn, American Jordan Chiles, originally finishing fifth, saw her score bumped up by one-tenth after a last-second inquiry, earning her the bronze medal with a score of 13.766. This marks the first individual Olympic medal of Chiles’ career. Romania’s Ana Barbosu narrowly missed the podium, finishing with a score of 13.700.

The medal ceremony for the floor exercise final became a highlight on social media as Biles and Chiles bowed down to Andrade, a gesture that garnered widespread attention and praise. Both American gymnasts spoke highly of Andrade, acknowledging her deserved recognition.

Simone Biles, despite not clinching gold in the floor exercise, further solidified her legacy in Paris. She concludes her third Olympic Games with a total of 11 Olympic medals, seven of which are gold, reinforcing her status as one of the greatest gymnasts of all time.

The 2024 Paris Olympics will be remembered for these historic performances, especially the rise of Alice D’Amato and the enduring excellence of Simone Biles and Rebeca Andrade.
