The Miami Marlins put together a strong all-around performance Wednesday night, shutting out the Boston Red Sox 4-0 behind a solid pitching performance from Ryan Gusto and a balanced offensive attack.
Gusto limited Boston to four hits over 5 2/3 innings to earn his first victory since July 30, 2025, as the Marlins avoided a sweep in the three-game series. Gusto improved to 1-3 on the season, walking three, striking out two and hitting two batters.
Miami’s offense was led by Javier Sanoja, who collected three hits and drove in a run. Otto López added two hits and stole two bases, while Heriberto Hernández contributed two hits and an RBI. The victory ended a five-game winning streak for Boston.
Hernández gave Miami an early lead with an RBI single in the first inning. The Marlins added another run in the second when López singled, stole second and came around to score after catcher Connor Wong’s throwing error.
Boston starter Sonny Gray entered the game looking to become the first pitcher in the majors to reach 17 wins this season. Instead, Gray suffered his fourth loss of the year, falling to 16-4 after allowing two runs and seven hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out five.
The Red Sox had opportunities to get back into the game, particularly in the sixth inning. With two outs, Andruw Monasterio was hit by a pitch before Jarren Duran singled, ending Gusto’s night.
Victor Vodnik came on in relief and immediately ended the threat by striking out Anthony Seigler. Vodnik then worked a perfect seventh inning. Janson Junk and Dax Fulton each followed with a scoreless inning to complete Miami’s shutout.
The Marlins added insurance in the eighth. López reached third base and scored when Owen Caissie grounded into a fielding error by Boston first baseman Nick Sogard. Sanoja followed with an RBI single to give Miami a four-run cushion.
Miami also benefited from Boston’s defensive struggles, as the Red Sox committed four errors. The loss also came with Boston catcher Audley Rutschman sitting out his second consecutive game because of right elbow irritation.
Mickey Gasper went 0-for-3 with a walk after reaching safely in each of his first eight plate appearances of the series. For the Marlins, the combination of timely hitting, aggressive baserunning and dominant late-inning pitching proved to be enough to hand Boston its first loss in six games.
Gusto’s performance was particularly encouraging for Miami, as he kept the Red Sox offense off balance throughout his outing before turning the game over to a bullpen that finished the job. With Sanoja leading the way at the plate and López creating havoc on the bases, the Marlins secured a much-needed victory and closed the series with momentum.:::
