Man Arrested After Burnt Body Found in Rural Southwest Miami-Dade
A 31-year-old man has been arrested and faces multiple charges in connection with the murder of a missing man whose burned body was found in a rural area of southwest Miami-Dade.
Roiniel Perez was charged with second-degree murder with a weapon, grand theft, and other offenses after leading police on a brief pursuit in the victim’s car, according to an arrest report.
The victim, identified as 52-year-old Oscar Rene Hernandez Augustin, was reported missing two days before his body was discovered on Thursday in the 23600 block of SW 227th Avenue. Miami-Dade Police said his body was burned from the waist down and in a moderate stage of decomposition. An autopsy revealed Augustin had been stabbed multiple times.
Authorities began investigating after Augustin’s white 2015 Toyota Corolla also went missing. On Sunday, officers spotted someone driving the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The driver, later identified as Perez, refused to comply, leading officers on a chase. The pursuit ended when Perez ran a red light and crashed into another vehicle. He fled on foot, hiding under a parked car before officers arrested him.
During questioning, Perez allegedly told detectives that Augustin had picked him up early Tuesday morning, the day of his disappearance. Police said Perez was in possession of Augustin’s bank card and ID, which he had allegedly used multiple times since the victim’s disappearance.
A search of Augustin’s vehicle revealed a significant amount of blood in the rear seats and multiple pairs of blue latex gloves. Detectives also discovered photos on Perez’s cellphone showing the blood-stained seats, the victim’s bank cards, and ID. Another image allegedly showed Perez’s palm with visible cuts.
Perez remains in custody, and authorities are continuing their investigation.
