Song Yadong delivered a spectacular finish in front of a raucous home crowd Saturday night, knocking out former title challenger Umar Nurmagomedov in the second round of UFC Fight Night: Nurmagomedov vs. Song at Oriental Sports Center in Shanghai.
“The Kung Fu Kid” stopped Nurmagomedov by KO via a right uppercut at 1:48 of Round 2, handing the highly regarded bantamweight the second loss of his career and producing one of the biggest victories of Song’s career.
The main event began with a fast-paced and competitive opening round. Both fighters landed meaningful strikes, while Song also threatened with a guillotine choke that ultimately went nowhere. Late in the round, Gomes landed a crushing lead elbow before following up with a series of precise strikes that forced the stoppage. Yan entered the bout with a résumé that included losses primarily to champions and top contenders, making Gomes’ performance even more significant. By defeating such an experienced opponent in emphatic fashion, Gomes has taken another major step toward the upper tier of the division.
The Shanghai event ultimately belonged to the fighters representing the host nation. Song’s knockout of Nurmagomedov was the defining moment of the night, while Yan Xiaonan’s matchup with Gomes provided another major spotlight for Chinese MMA.
