Nancy Dello Stritto, 76, of Pompano Beach, recently received a new Florida license plate during a standard registration process. When she looked closely at the alphanumeric sequence, she realized it could be read as “SQZ A55,” a combination many interpret as slang for “squeeze ass.”
The unexpected message left Dello Stritto both embarrassed and confused. She said she could not understand how the combination made it through the state’s screening process, especially considering Florida reviews personalized license plate requests for offensive or inappropriate language.
Unlike vanity plates, however, standard Florida license plates are assigned randomly. That means unusual combinations can occasionally slip through without anyone noticing an unintended meaning until they are placed on a vehicle.
The plate quickly became the talk of Dello Stritto’s retirement community. While she initially wanted to exchange it immediately, many of her friends and neighbors found the accidental message amusing and encouraged her to keep it. Some joked that the plate was one of a kind and would certainly get plenty of attention on the road.
Officials with the Broward County Tax Collector’s Office acknowledged the unusual situation and said drivers who receive a standard plate containing an unintended offensive or inappropriate message may request a replacement. The office told local media that Dello Stritto would be able to exchange the plate free of charge if she chooses.
Although she was initially determined to replace it, Dello Stritto has since begun to see the humor in the situation. She said she plans to notify the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles about the accidental wording but admitted she may hold onto the plate for now.
The incident has drawn widespread attention across Florida and on social media, where many people have joked that the randomly generated plate is far more memorable than most vanity plates. It also highlights the challenges of generating millions of unique license plate combinations while avoiding accidental words, abbreviations, and slang that can take on unintended meanings.
