Trump and Mamdani Leave Everyone Stunned With Their Unexpected Alliance for New York

Trump and Mamdani Set Aside Months of Attacks in an Oval Office Meeting No One Saw Coming

Donald Trump spent months calling Zohran Mamdani a “communist lunatic.” Mamdani fired back by labeling Trump a “despot” with a fascist agenda. And yet, in one of the strangest political pivots of 2025, both men walked into the Oval Office on Friday and emerged sounding like old colleagues suddenly committed to making New York City more affordable. Everything about it was surreal, unexpected, and deeply revealing about where American politics stands right now.

“I met with a man who’s a very rational person… He really wants to see New York be great again.” —Donald Trump

From Insults to Compliments Overnight

Trump campaigned hard against Mamdani during the mayoral race, even endorsing Andrew Cuomo at the last minute. Mamdani won anyway and pulled in 10% of Trump voters along the way. That crossover support seems to have softened the president. Trump congratulated Mamdani for running “an incredible race,” praised him as a potential “great mayor,” and said he would “be cheering for him.” Mamdani returned the favor, calling the meeting “productive,” stressing their shared desire to lower rent, food prices, and utility costs for New Yorkers. Standing next to Trump, he framed the meeting as rooted in “shared admiration and love” for the city they both came from.

“We spoke about rent, groceries, utilities, and the different ways people are being pushed out.” —Zohran Mamdani

Asked whether he’d be comfortable living in New York with Mamdani as mayor, Trump didn’t hesitate:

“Absolutely. We agree on a lot more than I would’ve thought.”

Republicans Furious at Trump’s Warm Embrace

The positive tone didn’t sit well with parts of the right. Far-right activist Laura Loomer melted down online, accusing Trump of endorsing socialism. Elise Stefanik, running for governor, blasted Trump for rejecting her attacks calling Mamdani a “jihadist,” doubling down on the smear even as Trump shut it down. Governor Kathy Hochul countered immediately, praising Trump for rejecting “Islamophobic attacks” and calling Stefanik’s rhetoric out of bounds.

What They Actually Talked About

Behind the theatrics, the two men reportedly focused on:

• Housing construction and affordability
• Utility and grocery costs
• Rent pressure across NYC
• Crime and public safety
• Federal funding for New York City

Trump said the meeting surprised him, especially Mamdani’s focus on housing development. He even suggested his earlier threats to cut funding from NYC were no longer on the table:

“I expect to be helping him, not hurting him.”

A senior White House official later said the private conversation “couldn’t have gone better.”

A Tense History Suddenly Softened

The détente is especially remarkable given the rhetoric exchanged during the campaign. Trump called Mamdani “dangerous,” warned he’d wreck the city, and hinted he would block billions in federal support if Mamdani won. Mamdani, during his victory speech, declared:

“If there’s any way to terrify a despot, it is by dismantling the conditions that allowed him to accumulate power.”

Trump noticed that line instantly, complaining on Fox News that Mamdani “should be nice to me.” By Friday, Trump was joking that being called a “despot” wasn’t even that insulting.

Bonding Over FDR of All People

One of the stranger moments of the afternoon: the two men apparently bonded over a portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt that Trump “found in the vaults.” Mamdani asked for a photo with it, praising the New Deal, the kind of left-leaning economic legacy Mamdani often invokes. Trump seemed delighted:

“He’s a big fan of the New Deal, I guess.”

The Bigger Political Picture

The optics matter. Both the progressive left and the MAGA right have been trying to nationalize Mamdani’s image. Both see him as a symbolic figure with the potential to shape midterms and 2028 narratives. Like Trump, Mamdani was an underdog who beat political royalty with sharp messaging and online organizing. Reporters asked Trump if he saw similarities.

“I think I’m a much better-looking person than him, right?” —Donald Trump, to “60 Minutes”

Shared Goals, Different Roads Ahead

Mamdani said he is willing to work with Trump on affordability issues but he warned he’ll fight hard against any agenda that harms immigrant families, cuts school funding, or withholds infrastructure money. So far, both men say they spent more time on crime and economic pressures than on immigration enforcement. Trump, for now, seems committed to cooperation:

“I want New York City to be great. It’s where I came from.”

Whether that goodwill survives the next political eruption is anyone’s guess. But for one day in Washington, two men who once treated each other as existential threats walked out looking like partners if only on the issues voters feel in their wallets.
