Chapman Homers, Harrison Shines as Giants Blank Marlins 2-0

Matt Chapman launched a towering home run and Kyle Harrison delivered five scoreless innings as the San Francisco Giants shut out the Miami Marlins 2-0 on Friday night at Oracle Park, snapping a three-game losing streak.

Chapman crushed a solo homer in the fourth inning, a 420-foot blast off Marlins starter Cal Quantrill, to provide insurance after the Giants took an early lead in the first. The home run was Chapman’s 10th of the season, tying him with Heliot Ramos and Wilmer Flores for the team lead.

Harrison (1-1), making just his second start since rejoining the rotation, kept Miami in check while stepping in for injured ace Justin Verlander, who remains sidelined with a strained right pectoral. The left-hander held the Marlins hitless until Eric Wagaman singled to lead off the fourth. Harrison allowed just that one hit over five innings, striking out five and walking three.

“Felt good out there,” said Harrison. “I just wanted to get ahead in counts and let the defense work behind me. The bullpen had my back tonight.”

That bullpen — a combination of five relievers — was nearly flawless. Spencer Bivens, Taylor Rogers, Luke Jackson, and Ryan Walker held Miami hitless across 3 2/3 innings before closer Camilo Doval recorded the final four outs for his sixth save of the season.

Doval was summoned in the eighth after the Marlins mounted their most serious threat of the night. Jesús Sánchez led off the inning with a single, and Otto Lopez reached after being hit by a pitch. With two outs and runners on, Doval entered and retired Connor Norby on a flyout to end the inning.

Offensively, the Giants managed just enough. In the first inning, Ramos tripled with two outs, and Flores followed with an 11-pitch at-bat that ended in a run-scoring single to put San Francisco up 1-0.

Tyler Fitzgerald went 2-for-3 with a double and a stolen base, contributing to San Francisco’s eight-hit attack.

Cal Quantrill (3-5) took the loss despite turning in a solid outing for Miami. He struck out a season-high seven over five innings, allowing two runs on eight hits with one walk.

Miami (22-33) squandered multiple opportunities. The Marlins stranded nine runners and went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Their only hits came from Wagaman, Norby, and Sánchez.

The Giants have now gone 12 straight games without scoring more than four runs, yet strong pitching helped them notch their 27th win of the season.

The series continues Saturday as Giants lefty Robbie Ray (7-0, 2.56 ERA) looks to stay unbeaten against Marlins right-hander Edward Cabrera (1-1, 4.73 ERA).
