Jake Reiner Breaks His Silence After Parents Rob and Michele Reiner Were Murdered: “Now It’s Just Me and Romy”

Eight months after filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife, photographer producer Michele Singer Reiner, were stabbed to death inside their Brentwood home, their eldest son Jake Reiner is speaking publicly about the tragedy for the first time. His younger brother, Nick Reiner, has been indicted on two counts of murder in connection with the killings and remains jailed without bail while awaiting trial. In an emotional interview with ABC7 Los Angeles, Jake described the months since the December 14, 2025 killings as a “living nightmare,” recounting the phone call that changed his life, the surreal experience of arriving at a crime scene at his childhood home and the complicated reality of losing both of his parents while watching his brother become the man accused of killing them.

“It’s been eight months. It feels like eight years at the same time. And it also feels like eight minutes because every moment that I wake up, I’m reminded of my reality.” — Jake Reiner

The Phone Call That Changed Everything

Jake Reiner, now 34, was not at his parents’ home when they were discovered dead. He was at Union Station in downtown Los Angeles attending a celebration of life for a high school friend when his younger sister, Romy Reiner, called him. Jake initially screened the call because he was in the middle of the memorial, but when Romy immediately called again, he knew something was wrong. Romy told him their father was dead and that she could not find their mother. Jake said he immediately went into shock. Rob and Michele Reiner, ages 78 and 70, were subsequently found dead inside their home in the 200 block of South Chadbourne Avenue in Brentwood. Authorities determined that both were victims of homicide.

The experience was particularly surreal for Jake because he had spent roughly a decade working as a local television news reporter and had covered crime scenes professionally. This time, however, the crime scene was his childhood home and the victims were his parents. Later that night, Jake learned that Los Angeles police were looking at his younger brother, Nick, as a suspect. Nick was arrested at approximately 9:15 p.m. in Exposition Park, according to the LAPD.

Nick Reiner Is Accused of Murdering His Parents

Los Angeles County prosecutors initially charged Nick Reiner with two counts of murder and a special-circumstance allegation of multiple murders, along with an allegation that he personally used a knife. Prosecutors allege Nick fatally stabbed his parents during the early morning hours of December 14 before leaving the Brentwood home. The case subsequently went before a grand jury, which returned an indictment on July 20. The indictment includes two murder counts and special circumstance allegations of multiple murders and lying in wait, along with an allegation involving the use of a knife. The indictment was publicly announced in August.

Nick has pleaded not guilty. The special circumstance allegations mean Nick could face life in prison without the possibility of parole or potentially the death penalty if convicted. Prosecutors have not yet made a final decision on whether they will seek the death penalty. The allegations against Nick Reiner have not been proven in court, and he is presumed innocent unless and until prosecutors establish his guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.

“Now It’s Just Me and Romy”

Jake described the aftermath as something even more complicated than losing both parents. In the span of hours, Rob and Michele were dead and his brother was in custody accused of killing them.

“He’s in jail. It’s like, I physically lost my parents, and then Nick was arrested. Now it’s just me and Romy, and we have to navigate this by ourselves essentially.” — Jake Reiner

That reality places Jake and Romy in an almost unimaginable position. They are the children of the two victims while simultaneously being the siblings of the man accused of murdering them. Jake told ABC7 that he has not spoken with Nick since his arrest. He has not attended his brother’s court hearings, although he did testify before the grand jury that ultimately indicted Nick. Jake also declined to discuss Nick’s efforts to access money from a family trust to finance his criminal defense. When asked whether he was surprised police considered Nick a suspect, Jake declined to answer. He also declined to publicly discuss his current feelings toward his brother or whether he wants to speak with him.

Jake Says His Grief Has Turned Into Rage

Jake was considerably more open about what the killings have done to him emotionally. His grief, he explained, frequently manifests as anger and rage not simply because his parents are gone, but because he had absolutely no control over what happened to his family.

“For me, it manifests into anger. It manifests into rage, into how unfair this was, how I didn’t get a say in what happened. I didn’t get to stop it from happening. I had no choice in the matter. I just have to accept the reality of it.” — Jake Reiner

That powerlessness runs throughout Jake’s account of the tragedy. He could not prevent his parents’ deaths, cannot reverse his brother’s arrest and cannot reconstruct the family that existed before December 14. He can only determine how he and Romy move forward. Jake said he still cannot understand why his parents were killed and does not expect any future revelation about the case to provide him with an explanation that makes sense.

Rob and Michele Reiner Never Stopped Trying to Help Nick

Jake also addressed one of the most painful elements of the family’s history: his parents’ years of trying to help Nick through his publicly documented struggles with addiction and mental health. Nick’s experiences with addiction had become public years before the killings. In 2015, he co-wrote “Being Charlie,” a film loosely inspired by his experiences with addiction and rehabilitation. His father directed the movie, and Jake described the project as one of Rob’s attempts to connect with his son. According to Jake, his parents’ commitment to all three of their children remained unconditional.

“My parents had unconditional love for all three of us. I can tell you they never stopped wanting to help him. They never stopped helping him.” — Jake Reiner

That history adds another painful dimension to the criminal case, but it is important not to confuse Nick’s history of addiction or mental-health struggles with evidence of criminal responsibility. Neither addiction nor mental illness establishes guilt for murder. The question of Nick Reiner’s criminal responsibility will ultimately be decided through the judicial process.

Dodger Stadium Became a Place to Remember Their Father

Jake and Romy largely stayed away from the media following the killings before making a public appearance together on August 2 at Dodger Stadium, where they participated in the ceremonial first pitch. The location carried enormous significance for the family. Rob Reiner was a devoted Dodgers fan and season ticket holder, and Jake said the family would sometimes attend three or four games a week together.

For Jake and Romy, returning to the stadium without their father transformed a familiar family tradition into a public memorial. Jake described the experience as emotional and said the speed of the ceremony made it difficult to fully absorb what was happening in the moment. The appearance also provided an early glimpse of what Jake and Romy are now attempting to do: prevent their parents’ lives from being remembered exclusively through the circumstances of their deaths.

Jake Is Turning Toward the Children’s Institute

A major part of that effort involves the Children’s Institute, a Los Angeles nonprofit providing education and support services to children and families. Jake’s aunt, Martine Singer, Michele’s sister, serves as the organization’s president and CEO, and Rob and Michele were longtime supporters of its work. Jake said the organization feels like an extension of the causes his parents cared about. Rob had previously served as emcee of the organization’s annual Cape & Gown Gala, and Jake plans to attend this year’s event in his parents’ place. The 2026 gala is scheduled for November 8 at the Beverly Wilshire hotel. For Jake, the appearance will be another milestone in a growing series of experiences that previously would have included his parents.

“It’s going to be hard. I think everything that we’ve done so far without them has been hard and weird.” — Jake Reiner

New Award Will Honor Michele and Rob Reiner

The Children’s Institute has also established the Michele & Rob Reiner Champion for Change Award in partnership with Jake and Romy. The organization says the award will honor the couple’s decades of advocacy for children, families, civil rights and social progress. The inaugural award will be presented to actress and longtime Reiner family friend Jamie Lee Curtis during the November gala.

Curtis founded My Hand In Yours, a charitable initiative that has raised nearly $2 million for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and has also publicly advocated for people in recovery. The Children’s Institute said the award was created to continue Rob and Michele’s legacy of civic leadership and advocacy. Jake said he does not necessarily feel obligated to replicate everything his parents accomplished, but he does feel responsible for making sure people remember who they were and what they stood for.

Rob and Michele Reiner Left a Legacy Far Beyond Hollywood

Rob Reiner’s career stretched across generations of American entertainment. He became nationally famous playing Michael “Meathead” Stivic on the groundbreaking television series “All in the Family” before becoming one of Hollywood’s most successful directors, with films including “This Is Spinal Tap,” “Stand by Me,” “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally…” and “A Few Good Men.” But Rob and Michele’s work also extended deeply into political advocacy, early childhood programs and civil rights. The Children’s Institute credits the couple with helping champion First 5 California, the voter-approved initiative funded through tobacco taxes that has directed billions of dollars toward early childhood development, health and school-readiness programs.

The organization also highlighted the Reiners’ involvement in the legal battle against California’s prohibition on same sex marriage and their broader support for civil rights and equality. For Jake, however, their public accomplishments are secondary to a much simpler reality. They were his parents, and he knew they loved him.

The Criminal Case Against Nick Reiner Is Far From Over

Nick Reiner remains jailed without bail as the criminal case moves toward trial. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for September 15. The grand-jury indictment means prosecutors can move toward trial without first presenting their evidence during a public preliminary hearing. Nick’s defense will have an opportunity to challenge the prosecution’s case, and the government carries the burden of proving every element of the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

For Jake and Romy, that means there is unlikely to be a clean ending to the ordeal anytime soon. The criminal justice process could repeatedly force them to confront details surrounding their parents’ deaths while prosecutors attempt to prove that their own brother was responsible. Jake’s decision not to publicly speculate about Nick’s guilt or discuss some of the most sensitive questions surrounding his brother is therefore significant. In his first major interview, he largely confined himself to what he knows personally: his parents, his grief, his anger and the family that disappeared around him in a matter of hours.

The courts will determine Nick Reiner’s criminal responsibility. Jake Reiner is confronting a different question, how to live with what remains.

“For the First Time in My Life, I See Them”

Near the end of the ABC7 interview, Jake reflected on how the tragedy has changed the way he sees other people experiencing loss. Before his parents were killed, another person’s grief could be understood intellectually. After experiencing catastrophic loss himself, Jake said he understands the private reality beneath it in a fundamentally different way.

“The worst kind of grief is your own because you’re the one living through it. And so, just because I lost my parents in the way that I did, it doesn’t mean that you losing a loved one in some other way is not also devastating.” — Jake Reiner

He concluded that there are countless people quietly carrying their own versions of grief and that, after what happened to his family, he sees them differently. That may be the most revealing message from Jake Reiner’s first major interview. The killings of Rob and Michele Reiner became an international Hollywood crime story. Their son’s account strips away much of that spectacle. Behind the famous names, criminal allegations, court proceedings and television cameras are two surviving children who lost both parents on the same day while their third sibling sits in jail accused of killing them. Eight months later, Jake Reiner still cannot explain why it happened. He has said he does not believe any future facts will ever make him understand it. For the first time, however, he is publicly explaining what it means to live through what happened next.
