Manchester City Survive Sunderland Thriller to Maintain Perfect Premier League Start

City Strike Early, but Sunderland Respond

Manchester City maintained their 100% Premier League start with a frantic 5-3 victory over Sunderland at the Etihad Stadium, surviving a thrilling encounter in which the visitors’ Brian Brobbey scored a hat trick. In a match characterized by poor defending at both ends, City struggled to establish the control they showed in last week’s Manchester derby. Sunderland repeatedly exposed gaps in the home defense, with Brobbey proving a constant threat throughout the afternoon.

Ultimately, two goals from Antoine Semenyo and a late strike from Erling Haaland secured all three points for City. Enzo Fernández and Rayan Cherki were also on target as new manager Enzo Maresca celebrated a fifth successive league victory. City head into the international break with a three-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Sunderland provided an early warning when they broke quickly from deep and Enzo Le Fée played Nilson Angulo through, but Angulo steered his effort wide. City punished the miss in the ninth minute when Fernández curled a free kick into the net after Iliman Ndiaye was brought down by Dayann Methalie. Sunderland goalkeeper Robin Roefs left a huge gap at his near post after setting up with only two players in the wall, and Fernández took full advantage for his first goal since his £125 million move from Chelsea.

Brobbey Keeps Sunderland in the Fight

Sunderland responded almost immediately. Three minutes later, Lee played a superb ball between Rúben Dias and Matheus Nunes, allowing Brobbey to deftly flick the ball beyond Gianluigi Donnarumma to make it 1-1.

Sunderland’s attacking play was impressive, but their defending continued to cause problems. An attempt to play out from the back went badly wrong when Kevin Danso gifted possession to City, with the resulting confusion allowing Cherki to tuck the ball into the net.

City regained the advantage before halftime when another Cherki delivery created panic inside the Sunderland penalty area. Sunderland appealed for a handball against Marc Guéhi, but the referee waved play on and Semenyo lashed the ball into the net.

The hosts could have extended their advantage before the break. Haaland inexplicably missed an open goal after being set up by Ndiaye, while Brobbey came close to completing his hat trick when his effort took an awkward deflection and was brilliantly tipped onto the crossbar by Donnarumma.

Semenyo Adds Another as Sunderland Refuse to Quit

City extended their lead early in the second half, although there was an element of fortune about the goal. A Cherki pass intended for Haaland ricocheted off a Sunderland defender and fell perfectly into Semenyo’s path. The forward made no mistake, finishing clinically to put City 4-2 ahead.

Sunderland refused to fold, however, and City’s defensive problems continued to give the visitors hope. Angulo brought down a long ball as he raced toward the back post, and although his effort appeared to be heading toward the line, Brobbey made sure by pouncing on the loose ball to complete his hat trick.

The goal set up a remarkable finish, with Sunderland almost leveling the contest moments later. Donnarumma failed to deal with a cross, and the ball bounced off Dias toward his own goal. The Portuguese defender reacted quickly, sprinting back to hook the ball off the line and preserve City’s narrow advantage.

Haaland Seals Five-Goal Victory

Haaland finally made amends for his earlier miss with nine minutes remaining. Gvardiol broke clear down the left and delivered the opportunity the Norwegian had been waiting for. Haaland slid in at the back post to tap home and give City a two-goal cushion at 5-3. Sunderland continued to push, but City held on to secure a wild three points and preserve their perfect league record.

For Maresca, the victory marked a fifth consecutive Premier League win and ensured City would enter the international break sitting three points clear at the summit. Sunderland, meanwhile, can take encouragement from an attacking performance that produced three goals at the Etihad, despite ultimately being undone by defensive mistakes.
