A frantic finish capped one of the most dramatic matches of the 2026 FIFA World Cup group stage as Austria and Algeria battled to a thrilling 3-3 draw Saturday night, a result that sent both nations into the knockout round while ending Iran’s World Cup hopes.
With both teams aware that a draw would likely be enough to advance, the contest nevertheless delivered six goals and a breathtaking finish that left fans on the edge of their seats until the final whistle.
The match appeared destined to end 2-2 before Algeria captain Riyad Mahrez produced a stunning moment in second-half stoppage time. His second goal of the night, scored with about a minute remaining, suddenly put Austria on the brink of elimination and seemed poised to send Iran through as one of the tournament’s best third-place teams.
Austria refused to let its World Cup dream slip away.
Moments after Mahrez’s dramatic strike, towering forward Sasa Kalajdzic rose above the Algerian defense and powered home a header, leveling the match at 3-3 in the dying seconds and sparking jubilant celebrations from the Austrian players and supporters.

Austria struck first through veteran forward Marko Arnautovic before Marcel Sabitzer doubled the advantage later in the match. Iran would have advanced as one of the eight best third-place finishers had either Austria or Algeria won the match. Instead, Kalajdzic’s stoppage-time equalizer simultaneously preserved Austria’s tournament and guaranteed Algeria’s progression, leaving Iran eliminated by the slimmest of margins.
