Brazil Strike at the Death as Martinelli’s 96th-Minute Winner Ends Japan’s World Cup Dream

Brazil needed every second of regulation to keep their 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes alive, with substitute Gabriel Martinelli scoring a dramatic 96th-minute winner to seal a thrilling 2-1 comeback victory over Japan in the Round of 32 on Sunday in Houston.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side appeared destined for extra time after battling back from a first-half deficit, but Martinelli delivered the decisive blow deep into stoppage time to send the five-time world champions into the Round of 16 while ending Japan’s courageous tournament run.

The heartbreaking defeat denied Japan its long-awaited first-ever victory in the knockout stage of a FIFA World Cup after a disciplined and spirited performance that pushed one of the tournament favorites to the brink.

Japan frustrated Brazil throughout much of the opening half, absorbing pressure while remaining organized defensively. Brazil controlled possession from the outset but struggled to carve out clear-cut opportunities against Japan’s compact defensive shape.

Bruno Guimarães threatened early with a deflected effort that spun behind for a corner, while Matheus Cunha forced goalkeeper Zion Suzuki into a sharp save with a low strike. At the other end, Japan’s first opportunity came from a free kick after Casemiro fouled Junya Ito, though Daichi Kamada’s effort crashed harmlessly into the Brazilian wall.

Kaishu Sano had already escaped controversy after receiving an early yellow card for a late challenge on Vinícius Júnior before avoiding a second booking following another clumsy tackle on Cunha.

The Mainz midfielder then made Brazil pay.

In the 29th minute, Sano intercepted Danilo’s loose pass near midfield, surged past Casemiro with determination and unleashed a powerful low drive from outside the penalty area that beat Alisson Becker and nestled into the bottom corner, giving Japan a deserved 1-0 advantage.

The goal stunned Brazil, whose response before halftime consisted mainly of speculative efforts from Vinícius Júnior and Cunha that failed to seriously trouble Suzuki.

Recognizing his team’s sluggish display, Ancelotti made key tactical adjustments during the interval, and Brazil emerged with far greater urgency.

Guimarães nearly equalized with a forceful header that Suzuki managed to keep out before Casemiro somehow failed to score moments later, directing a free header toward goal only for Takehiro Tomiyasu to make a remarkable goal-line clearance.

Japan briefly threatened on a counterattack after Ito cleared the danger, but Brazil continued to build momentum.

Their pressure finally paid off in the 56th minute.

Gabriel delivered an inviting cross to the back post, where Casemiro rose above the defense and powered a header beyond Suzuki to level the match at 1-1. The goal completed the midfielder’s redemption after his difficult first-half performance.

Brazil nearly completed the turnaround moments later when Vinícius Júnior danced through several defenders before delicately attempting to chip Suzuki, but the Japanese goalkeeper managed to get just enough of the ball to push it onto the post.

Despite Brazil’s growing confidence, Japan regrouped admirably, defending resolutely as the match entered its closing stages. The underdogs looked increasingly likely to force extra time as they repelled wave after wave of Brazilian attacks.

But with five minutes of stoppage time already played, Brazil produced one final moment of quality.

Guimarães threaded a perfectly weighted pass into the path of Martinelli, who had entered in the 66th minute. The Arsenal winger kept his composure, curling a clinical finish beyond Suzuki and into the far corner to spark wild celebrations among the Brazilian players and supporters.

The dramatic winner completed Brazil’s comeback and secured a place in the Round of 16, where Ancelotti’s squad will continue its pursuit of a record-extending sixth World Cup title.

For Japan, the defeat was a cruel ending to a brave and disciplined performance that came within moments of producing one of the greatest victories in the nation’s football history. Instead, Brazil’s experience, persistence and late quality proved decisive, with Martinelli delivering the knockout punch just before the final whistle.
