Congress Reopens Investigation Into Brazil’s ‘Roswell’ as Lawmakers Demand CIA and FBI Release Decades of UFO Records
For nearly 30 years, the alleged UFO crash in the Brazilian city of Varginha has occupied a unique place in UFO lore, earning comparisons to the infamous Roswell incident in New Mexico. Now, the case has returned to the national spotlight after a renewed congressional effort in Washington seeks to determine whether U.S. intelligence agencies possess classified evidence connected to the mysterious 1996 event.
The renewed push is being led by Republican Rep. Eric Burlison of Missouri, one of Congress’ most active members on Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP) investigations. His latest requests to the CIA and FBI have thrust one of the world’s most controversial alleged alien encounters back into mainstream political discussion.
The Incident Known as “Brazil’s Roswell”
The events unfolded in January 1996 in the southeastern Brazilian city of Varginha, where numerous witnesses reported seeing a cigar shaped object descending before apparently crashing outside the city. Within hours, rumors spread that unusual debris had been recovered and that Brazilian military personnel had secured the crash site.
The case became even more extraordinary after three teenage girls reported encountering what they described as a frightened, non-human creature with large red eyes, brown oily skin, and prominent veins running along its body. Their testimony became one of the defining elements of what would eventually become known worldwide as the “Varginha Incident.”
Over the following decades, speculation intensified that one or more surviving beings had been captured by the Brazilian military before eventually being transferred to U.S. intelligence agencies, including the CIA and FBI. Those claims have never been publicly substantiated, and both governments have consistently denied allegations of extraterrestrial recoveries.
Witnesses Bring Their Testimony to Washington
The nearly three decade old case received new attention after researchers and firsthand witnesses traveled to Washington, D.C., to brief members of Congress.
Among them was Carlos, who says he arrived near the reported crash site shortly after the incident. According to his account, he recovered an unusual metallic fragment resembling aluminum foil. Unlike conventional metal, he claimed the material could be crushed in his hand before instantly returning to its original shape without leaving permanent creases, an often cited characteristic in historical UFO reports involving so called “memory metals.”
Perhaps the most dramatic testimony came from a Brazilian surgeon who says he treated one of the alleged surviving beings. According to his account, the creature resembled a small child with an unusually large teardrop shaped head. More striking than its appearance, he said, was the overwhelming sense of intelligence and calm he experienced while examining it. Congressman Burlison later summarized the doctor’s impressions by saying the physician believed the being viewed humanity almost sympathetically, as though it found humans’ attempts to provide medical care “cute” while remaining vastly more advanced.
If true, such claims would represent one of the most extraordinary medical encounters ever documented. However, no independently verified medical records confirming the existence of the alleged patient have been publicly released.
The Mysterious Death of a Brazilian Soldier
Another long debated aspect of the Varginha case centers on the reported death of a Brazilian soldier allegedly involved in the recovery operation. According to researchers involved with the investigation, the soldier became seriously ill after reportedly coming into physical contact with either recovered debris or one of the alleged entities. He later died from a rapidly progressing infection.
Witnesses appearing before lawmakers claimed medical testing identified an unusual microorganism or bacteria in the soldier’s blood that researchers were unable to identify. Those claims have not been independently verified through publicly available scientific records, but Congressman Burlison has expressed interest in determining whether preserved biological samples still exist and whether modern laboratory testing could provide definitive answers.
Congress Wants Answers From the CIA and FBI
The renewed attention is no longer limited to UFO researchers. On July 7, 2026, Congressman Burlison formally requested that both the CIA and FBI release any records they possess relating to the Varginha incident. His requests specifically seek operational records that could either support or refute decades of speculation.
Among the materials requested are flight logs documenting whether any U.S. military or intelligence aircraft traveled to the region immediately following the alleged crash, as well as any intelligence reports concerning cooperation between American and Brazilian authorities. He is also exploring whether the Brazilian soldier’s remains could be exhumed for modern forensic analysis and whether any preserved blood samples were ever transferred to U.S. laboratories.
A Growing Congressional Interest in UAPs
The Varginha investigation arrives amid a broader resurgence of congressional interest in unidentified anomalous phenomena. Since 2023, lawmakers from both parties have held multiple hearings examining military encounters with unexplained aerial objects, allegations from government whistleblowers, and longstanding questions about classified UAP programs. Burlison has emphasized that he remains skeptical despite the compelling testimony presented by witnesses. Rather than endorsing extraordinary claims outright, he says his goal is to determine whether verifiable evidence exists.
“I’m in search of the truth,” Burlison said. “I’m not going to stop until I get the cold, hard facts or the materials in my hands.”
A Mystery That Refuses to Disappear
Thirty years after the reported events in Varginha, the case continues to divide scientists, investigators, skeptics, and believers. No publicly released physical evidence has conclusively demonstrated that an extraterrestrial craft crashed in Brazil or that non-human beings were recovered. Likewise, there is no publicly available evidence confirming that the CIA or FBI secretly transported extraterrestrial materials to the United States.
Yet the persistence of eyewitness testimony, renewed congressional inquiries, and ongoing demands for classified records have ensured that the Varginha incident remains one of the world’s most debated UFO cases. Whether the latest investigation uncovers long-hidden government documents or simply closes another chapter in one of ufology’s greatest mysteries, Congress is once again asking questions that many believed had been left behind decades ago.
