Lions Sack Lamar Jackson Seven Times in 38-30 Monday Night Win Over Ravens

Punishing all night — and tricky when they had to be — the Detroit Lions battered the Baltimore Ravens with a performance that epitomized everything they’ve become under head coach Dan Campbell. Behind relentless pressure on Lamar Jackson and a punishing ground game, the Lions powered their way to a 38-30 victory on Monday Night Football.

Jahmyr Gibbs and David Montgomery each scored twice on the ground, with Montgomery capping a 151-yard performance with a 31-yard touchdown run in the final two minutes to put the game out of reach. Detroit sacked Jackson seven times and outrushed Baltimore 224–85 in a statement win that showed the Lions are firmly in the Super Bowl conversation.

“We’re built to impose our will, and tonight we did that,” Campbell said. “We wanted to be the more physical team, and I think we proved it.”

Detroit’s dominance started up front. With Ravens defensive lineman Nnamdi Madubuike and edge rusher Kyle Van Noy both sidelined, Baltimore had little answer for the Lions’ offensive front. Detroit ripped off long drives of 98 and 96 yards — including an 18-play marathon that consumed nearly 11 minutes — as Jared Goff operated comfortably from a clean pocket.

The Lions were aggressive on fourth down, converting all three attempts. The biggest came with the score tied 21-21 early in the fourth quarter. On fourth-and-1 from the Baltimore 4, Amon-Ra St. Brown took a jet sweep before pitching the ball back to Gibbs, who strolled in for the go-ahead touchdown.

“Coach always says we play fearless,” Gibbs said. “That was one of those plays where you trust your teammates and go make something happen.”

Jackson threw three touchdown passes — two to tight end Mark Andrews — and kept the Ravens in it despite relentless pressure. His final strike, a 27-yarder to Andrews with 29 seconds left, brought Baltimore within eight. But a failed two-point attempt and an unsuccessful onside kick sealed their fate.

It was a frustrating night for a Ravens offense that had scored 40-plus points in each of its first two games. Derrick Henry broke free for a 28-yard touchdown run in the first quarter but was bottled up afterward. His costly fumble in the fourth quarter, his second in three weeks in a key spot, handed Detroit the ball deep in Ravens territory.

“We didn’t execute in the critical moments,” head coach John Harbaugh said. “Give Detroit credit — they outplayed us at the line of scrimmage.”

The result was a sharp reversal from the last meeting between the teams, a 38-6 Ravens rout in 2023. Baltimore led that game 28-0 before Detroit even recorded a first down. On Monday night, however, the Lions flipped the script, winning in Baltimore for the first time in franchise history and snapping a five-game losing streak in the series.

Detroit also became the first team since New England in 2021 to record two touchdown drives of at least 95 yards in the same game.

The Ravens (1-2) now face another stiff challenge, traveling to Kansas City on Sunday for a marquee showdown between Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes. The Lions (3-1) will return home to face the Cleveland Browns, riding momentum from perhaps their most complete win of the Dan Campbell era.

“This was a statement,” Montgomery said. “We can run on anyone, we can win anywhere — and we’re just getting started.”
