Panthers’ Matthew Tkachuk Expected to Be Sidelined Until December Following Surgery

The Florida Panthers will be without star forward Matthew Tkachuk for the opening months of the 2025-26 NHL season. General manager Bill Zito announced Wednesday that Tkachuk is expected to be sidelined until December as he recovers from offseason surgery to repair a sports hernia and torn adductor muscle.

The timeline for Tkachuk’s return remains fluid, with Zito emphasizing that recovery benchmarks will determine the next steps in his rehab. “He’s progressing, but there’s a process to this,” Zito said. “We’ll keep monitoring it. December is realistic, but we’ll see how he responds as we go.”

Tkachuk underwent surgery in August, after gutting through the injuries during the Panthers’ run to their second straight Stanley Cup championship last spring. He missed the final 25 games of the regular season but still produced 23 points — eight goals and 15 assists — in 23 playoff contests. That included seven points in the Stanley Cup Final, where Florida defeated the Edmonton Oilers in six games.

The Panthers also expect forward Tomas Nosek to be sidelined for an extended period following an offseason injury. “It’s going to be months, for sure,” Zito said, without offering specifics on Nosek’s timetable.

While the absence of Tkachuk is a significant early-season blow, the December target date offers some silver lining. Not only would it give Florida time to reintegrate him well before the playoffs, but it also positions Tkachuk to be fully prepared for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in February. The 27-year-old is expected to be a centerpiece of Team USA’s roster as it chases its first Olympic gold medal since 1980.

Florida begins training camp Thursday and will open the regular season at home against the Chicago Blackhawks on Oct. 7.
