NFL International Opens in Australia
The San Francisco 49ers made NFL history Friday, dominating the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in the league’s first regular-season game in Australia before a record-setting crowd of 100,021 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
After spending a full week in Melbourne adjusting to the time difference, experiencing the city’s sights and food, and embracing the local fans, the 49ers looked completely comfortable when kickoff arrived. The Rams, meanwhile, arrived just 28 hours before the game and struggled to match San Francisco’s intensity as the Niners controlled the game on both sides of the football.
The victory gave San Francisco an emphatic opening statement in the NFC West rivalry, while the Rams left Australia with plenty of questions surrounding their Super Bowl aspirations.
Purdy Leads 49ers Offensive Attack
Quarterback Brock Purdy efficiently guided the San Francisco offense, passing for 205 yards while helping the 49ers consistently find opportunities against a Rams defense that struggled to contain them.
Mike Evans, Demarcus Robinson and Deebo Samuel each caught touchdown passes from Purdy as San Francisco produced the game’s final 24 points. The 49ers did not need an explosive statistical performance from Purdy because their defense consistently put the offense in favorable situations.
Los Angeles initially appeared ready to make history of its own. Kyren Williams scored the first touchdown in an NFL regular-season game played in Australia when he powered into the end zone on a 5-yard run early in the second quarter. That touchdown would be the Rams’ only score of the afternoon.
San Francisco Defense Shuts Down Stafford
The 49ers’ defense took over after Williams’ touchdown, frustrating Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford throughout the remainder of the game. Stafford completed just 15 of 25 passes for 155 yards as San Francisco limited the Rams to 290 total yards and one touchdown. The performance was particularly impressive considering Los Angeles entered the season with one of the NFL’s most highly regarded offenses.
San Francisco’s defense, now led by longtime Rams coordinator Raheem Morris, delivered several critical plays. One of the biggest came in the third quarter when the 49ers stopped Stafford on a fourth-down quarterback sneak from the San Francisco 1-yard line.
Fred Warner and Nick Bosa also made an immediate impact in their first games back from lengthy injury absences, providing San Francisco with a significant boost on defense.
Garrett Quiet in Rams Debut
Myles Garrett had a much quieter debut with the Rams after missing much of training camp while dealing with injuries. The reigning AP NFL Defensive Player of the Year failed to record a tackle and had little impact against San Francisco’s offensive line.
After the game, Garrett acknowledged that his knee injury has left him less than 100% healthy. His limited impact was particularly noticeable as the Rams struggled to slow down the 49ers throughout the second half.
49ers Preparation Pays Off
The contrasting approaches to the Australian trip became one of the biggest storylines leading into the historic matchup. San Francisco arrived in Melbourne a week before the game, allowing the players to gradually adjust their body clocks while becoming familiar with the city. The team also embraced the local community, helping the 49ers develop a strong following among Australian fans.
The Rams took a dramatically different approach, remaining in California until arriving in Melbourne less than two days before kickoff. The team essentially maintained its California schedule and attempted to handle the significant time-zone change without an extended adjustment period. The result provided plenty of fuel for the debate over how NFL teams should prepare for international games.
Melbourne Embraces the NFL
Despite the unusual Friday morning kickoff, the atmosphere inside the Melbourne Cricket Ground was electric. A crowd of 100,021 filled the iconic venue, giving the NFL its seventh-largest regular-season attendance figure in league history. Australia’s sporting capital embraced the event with a party atmosphere as fans experienced their first regular-season NFL game on Australian soil.
The 49ers also appeared to benefit from the support they received throughout their week in Melbourne. By the time the teams took the field, San Francisco had already won over many local fans. The historic setting combined with the NFC West rivalry created a memorable first chapter for the NFL in Australia.
49ers Make a Statement
San Francisco ultimately made the trip about more than history. The 27-7 victory sent a strong message to the rest of the NFC West and demonstrated that the 49ers can dominate a talented opponent on both sides of the ball.
For Los Angeles, the result raises immediate questions. The Rams were widely viewed as a legitimate Super Bowl contender entering the season, but their performance in Melbourne was far from championship caliber.
The Rams will have an opportunity to respond quickly, while the 49ers return home riding the momentum of one of the most memorable victories in franchise history.
Week 2 Matchups
The 49ers will return to the United States to host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday, Sept. 20. The Rams will return to Los Angeles, where they will host the New York Giants on Monday, Sept. 21.
For San Francisco, the historic Australian trip could ultimately be remembered as the beginning of something special. The 49ers arrived early, embraced the experience and left Melbourne with a convincing victory in the NFL’s first regular-season game in Australia.
