Airbnb Introduces New Cleaning Rules to Reduce Guest Chores

Airbnb New Cleaning Rules Limit Guest Chores in 2026

Airbnb is changing its cleaning rules to reduce the amount of work guests are expected to complete before checking out of a rental. The new policy limits hosts from requiring time consuming chores, including washing dishes, stripping bedsheets and taking trash off the property. The updated rules take effect November 20, 2026, and apply to reservations booked on or after that date. The changes establish clearer expectations for guests and hosts, addressing complaints about checkout lists that require travelers to clean a property despite paying for their accommodations.

Airbnb Bans Certain Checkout Cleaning Tasks

Under the updated policy, Airbnb hosts generally cannot require guests to complete tasks that demand significant time or effort or would typically be performed by a professional cleaner. Prohibited requirements include stripping bedsheets, washing and putting away dishes, starting laundry and transporting trash to an off site disposal location. These restrictions are intended to prevent hosts from shifting substantial cleaning responsibilities onto departing guests. However, the policy does not eliminate every checkout responsibility. Guests may still be asked to complete simple tasks, such as placing used dishes in the sink, gathering used towels and sorting garbage and recycling into designated indoor bins. Hosts may also establish reasonable instructions for securing a property before departure, including locking doors and returning keys.

Airbnb Cleaning Fees Will Remain

The policy does not eliminate cleaning fees or require every host to include cleaning costs in the nightly rental price. Hosts can continue setting their prices, meaning the total cost of a stay will vary by property. The changes instead address which chores hosts can require guests to perform. Travelers who previously encountered extensive checkout lists may benefit from having clearer limits on those expectations. Whether the changes will lead some hosts to increase rental prices or cleaning fees remains uncertain. Hosts have raised concerns that additional cleaning responsibilities could increase their operating costs, but any broader price increases have not been established.

Airbnb Requires Clearer House Rules

Airbnb is also making house rules easier for guests to find before booking. Hosts must disclose their rules and reasonable requests in the designated section of a listing, allowing travelers to review expectations before committing to a reservation. Hosts generally cannot introduce new requirements after a booking has been confirmed through private messages, signs inside the property or verbal instructions. The platform is also restricting hosts from imposing their own fines or other penalties on guests. If a guest damages a property, hosts can use Airbnb’s established procedures for seeking reimbursement.

What Happens if Hosts Violate the New Rules?

Airbnb may take action against hosts whose cleaning requirements violate the updated policy. Potential consequences include warnings, requests to update listings, notices informing future guests about violations and reduced visibility in search results. The company may consider circumstances specific to a property or location when evaluating whether a request is reasonable. For example, local drought restrictions or wildlife concerns may justify certain additional instructions. Reservations booked before November 20, 2026, remain subject to the previous policy.

What the New Airbnb Cleaning Rules Mean for Travelers

The updated policy gives travelers clearer expectations when booking short term rentals. Guests will generally no longer be required to complete substantial cleaning chores, such as washing dishes or stripping bedsheets, before leaving. Hosts can still request basic tidying and establish reasonable rules for protecting their properties. Cleaning fees may also remain part of the total cost. Ultimately, Airbnb’s changes aim to make checkout less burdensome and prevent unexpected cleaning demands. Travelers should review listing details before booking and contact Airbnb if a host requests chores that appear to violate the updated policy.
