The possibility that military officials were attending the event nevertheless makes the bombing particularly sensitive. Independent channels have circulated claims that a birthday celebration for a Russian general was underway at Balzi Rossi when the explosion occurred. Online speculation has gone further, naming senior officers allegedly connected with the gathering, but the available public evidence does not yet justify stating those identities as confirmed.
If investigators ultimately establish that senior Russian military officials were gathered at the restaurant, the attack would take on an entirely different strategic significance. Rather than a random bombing of a civilian venue, it could represent another attempted targeted killing within the Russian capital. For now, that remains a possibility, not an established conclusion.
Central Moscow Locked Down After Explosion
The response reflected the seriousness with which Russian authorities were treating the attack. Emergency personnel, forensic investigators and heavily armed law enforcement officers converged on Kudrinskaya Square as authorities cordoned off the area and began examining the blast site.

Moscow has repeatedly blamed Kyiv for assassination operations inside Russia, while Ukraine has not publicly claimed responsibility for every attack attributed to it.

Investigators will now attempt to reconstruct the woman’s movements, communications and contacts while determining whether the device was remotely detonated and whether the private event was deliberately targeted.
If evidence ultimately establishes that Russian military officials were gathered at Balzi Rossi and that the bomb was intended to kill them, Saturday’s explosion could become one of the most audacious attempted assassination operations in central Moscow during the war.
