Williams Throws for 308 Yards and Two Touchdowns
Caleb Williams threw for 308 yards and two touchdowns, and the Chicago Bears held off Drake Maye and the New England Patriots for a 30-24 victory Thursday night at Soldier Field in Week 7 of the NFL season.
Williams connected on 22 of 33 passes in his second game back after missing time with a right hamstring injury, delivering another impressive performance as Chicago improved to 5-2. Rookie wide receiver Luther Burden and tight end Colston Loveland played key roles in the victory, helping the Bears withstand a late push from New England.
Maye finished 24 of 31 for 321 yards and two touchdowns for the Patriots, who had won three consecutive games behind their second-year quarterback. New England’s winning streak came to an end despite another productive outing from Maye, who had thrown 10 touchdown passes with just one interception during the team’s previous three victories.
The matchup marked the second meeting between the young quarterbacks since they entered the NFL in the 2024 draft. Maye was selected third overall by New England, while Williams went No. 1 to Chicago. In their rookie seasons, Maye led the Patriots to a 19-3 victory over Williams and the Bears. This time, Williams came out on top in an entertaining rematch.
Burden, Loveland Help Bears Build First Half Lead
Chicago established control in the first half by taking advantage of Williams’ connection with his young receiving targets. Burden finished with four catches for 130 yards, including a pivotal touchdown that helped the Bears take a 20-7 lead with 14 seconds remaining before halftime.
Burden’s 24-yard touchdown reception came on third-and-17, when Williams found the rookie on a screen pass. Loveland, Kalif Raymond and Darnell Wright helped create space for Burden, who maneuvered through the defense for his second touchdown reception of the season. Loveland also contributed a 12-yard touchdown catch, giving Williams another reliable option in the passing game as Chicago capitalized on opportunities to build its advantage.
Maye accounted for New England’s first touchdown with an impressive 7-yard run with 11:33 remaining in the first half. However, the Patriots missed a chance to narrow the deficit further when Bears linebacker D’Marco Jackson intercepted Maye in the end zone late in the second quarter on a pass intended for rookie tight end Eli Raridon. The interception proved significant as Chicago carried its 13 point lead into halftime with momentum on its side.
Patriots Rally Behind Maye and Stevenson
New England responded after the break, refusing to let the Bears pull away. Maye connected with Raridon for a 30-yard touchdown in the third quarter, giving the Patriots another scoring opportunity as they attempted to climb back into the game.
The Patriots delivered another major blow on the final play of the third quarter when running back Rhamondre Stevenson broke free for a 48-yard touchdown reception. Stevenson slipped out of the backfield, and Maye lofted a pass over Bears safety Cam Lewis. Stevenson accelerated downfield, benefited from a block by DeMario Douglas and cut past cornerback Jaylon Johnson on his way into the end zone.
Stevenson finished with five receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown, providing a valuable receiving threat for New England as the Patriots continued to pressure Chicago. Maye’s 321 passing yards and two touchdown passes kept the visitors within striking distance, but the Bears made enough plays late to preserve their advantage.
Santos Delivers Career Long Field Goal to Secure Victory
Chicago kicker Cairo Santos delivered one of the night’s biggest plays when he connected on a 58-yard field goal with 1:34 remaining. The kick was a career long for Santos and matched the Bears’ franchise record, giving Chicago valuable breathing room after he had missed a 53-yard attempt earlier in the fourth quarter.
Maye responded by guiding New England into field-goal range, setting up Andy Borregales for a 47-yard kick with 37 seconds remaining. Borregales converted to make it a six point game, leaving the Patriots needing a final opportunity to complete the comeback. Chicago eliminated that possibility by recovering the ensuing onside kick, allowing the Bears to close out the 30-24 victory.
Williams’ performance also extended an encouraging stretch for the young quarterback. He became the first Bears quarterback to throw for more than 300 yards in consecutive games since Mitchell Trubisky accomplished the feat in three straight games in 2018. The victory further strengthened Chicago’s position at 5-2, while New England dropped to 4-3 after seeing its three game winning streak come to an end.
Bears Honor Mike Ditka in First Home Game Since His Death
Thursday night’s game carried special significance for Chicago as the Bears played their first home game since the death of Hall of Fame tight end and longtime head coach Mike Ditka on Oct. 9. The organization honored Ditka with a pregame moment of silence, while fans at Soldier Field received fake mustaches as a tribute to the iconic coach.
Ditka’s No. 89 jersey was visible throughout the stands, and supporters also wore Bears sweaters reminiscent of the sideline attire he made famous during his coaching career. The tributes provided an emotional backdrop to a game in which Chicago delivered another important victory in front of its home crowd of 60,520.
Up Coming Football for the Patriots and Bears
The Patriots will look to rebound when they travel to Miami on Nov. 1. New England will aim to return to the win column after a competitive performance against Chicago ended its three game winning streak. The Bears, meanwhile, will head west for a Monday night matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on Nov. 2. With Williams continuing to find his rhythm and Chicago improving to 5-2, the Bears will look to carry their momentum into another important test on the road.
