Its summer time and life is thriving through the world. People are planting their gardens and flowers are pollinating everywhere. What does this mean? Allergies are everywhere once again. However, did you know that cannabis is a possibly effective way to treat allergies?

Allergies?

An allergy is defined as a condition in which the immune system as an abnormal reaction to a foreign substance. There are tons of different allergies. Whether they be to pollen, food or even animals. Effects from these allergies could be:

  • Skin reactions such as rashes
  • Eye redness and irritation
  • Congestion
  • Sneezing
  • Inflammation

Regardless the reaction one receives from said allergies, no one truly enjoys the effects these foreign substances have on their body. Most people will rely on their antihistamines for treatment of said conditions. Unfortunately though these antihistamines could have effects on the body that aren’t the most beneficial. This is not me saying that these particular medicines don’t work, because they do. If they didn’t, then doctors wouldn’t prescribe them and they wouldn’t be the forefront for treating your dreadful allergic reactions. There are alternatives though outside of these medicines.

Alternatives to Traditional Treatments

There are tons of alternatives to traditional medicines that have surfaced around the world. Many people aren’t big fans of allowing medicines to take priority over their body even if they are to defend one from these allergies. Some natural ways people combat these allergies are through the use of:

  • Butterbur, a natural herb said to help a wide variety of pains and ailments
  • Bromelain, an enzyme within the stem, juice and fruit of the pineapple plant
  • Honey
  • Vitamin C

There are many more that aren’t listed here that you can find people use religiously to treat ailments and allergic reactions. One in particular that can be used that isn’t listed is Cannabis.

How Does Cannabis Treat Allergies

Cannabis-derived compounds such as THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD (cannabidiol) have agents within them that specifically effect a human’s endocannabinoid system. According to Linda Strause, PhD:

“The endogenous cannabinoid system (ECS), named after the cannabis plant that led to its discovery, is one of the most important physiological system involved in establishing and maintaining human health. Endocannabinoids and their receptors, CB1 and CB2, are found throughout the body: in the brain, organs, connective tissues, glands, and immune cells. In each tissue, the ECS performs different tasks with the goal of maintaining homeostasis, the maintenance of a stable internal environment despite fluctuations in the external environment.”

That being said, these cannabis-derived compounds play a large effect in our body. But, how does this relate to allergies? In the act of maintaining homeostasis, these compounds help the body react to these foreign substances in ways allowing positive body functions. Cannabis helps to close airways causing coughing and throat irritant and inflammation. This allows a person to withstand the pollen that irritates their system causing sneezing, coughing and any type of throat irritant. It can also help a person from reaching sensitization of a certain allergen. Sensitization is the body becoming more and more sensitive to a foreign substance before eventually obtaining a full blown allergy. THC is said to suppress the immune system’s response to foreign substances that cause allergies. In doing so, this prevents the body from reaching full sensitization.

 Using Cannabis for Allergy Treatments

There are now a wide variety of ways to intake cannabis-derived compounds into the body. Based on the allergies of course, there are ideal ways to do so. If you’re trying to treat asthma like allergy symptoms then smoking probably isn’t going to be your ideal way of taking these compounds. You could try a cream or edible version of these compounds. Picking your ideal way to treat your sensitization is your first step towards using cannabis-derived compounds for your allergies. The next step is receiving and trying it out to find if this alternative idea could be your key to a natural method of allergy treatment. If you’re curious about doing so then check out CBDipedia.
