Duggar Spotlight: Jinger Duggar’s Husband Jeremy Vuolo Opens Up About “Deep Betrayal” in Early Marriage

Jinger Duggar Family News

Jinger Duggar Vuolo and her husband, former pro soccer player turned pastor Jeremy Vuolo, are no strangers to public scrutiny. As one of the breakout stars of the Duggar family’s now-defunct reality franchise — 19 Kids and Counting and Counting On — Jinger has steadily distanced herself from the ultra-conservative ideologies she was raised in. Now, the couple is speaking candidly about challenges they’ve faced, including what Jeremy described as a “deep betrayal” early in their marriage. During the July 30 episode of the Jinger & Jeremy Podcast, Jeremy, 37, revealed a particularly rocky chapter in their relationship that occurred not long after they tied the knot in November 2016. “There was a time in our life, very early on in our marriage, where we experienced some… I describe it as deep betrayal,” Jeremy said. “You have relationships in your life that ground you, and when those shake or are removed, you feel like, ‘What am I doing?’” While he didn’t provide explicit details about the nature of the betrayal, Jeremy described the period as one filled with emotional upheaval and spiritual confusion. “This was a moment when we were both very deeply unsettled,” he continued. “We both felt that shaking.” Jinger, now 30, didn’t elaborate further on the specifics, but the couple indicated that the fallout led to significant personal growth and a reevaluation of their priorities.

Who Are the Duggars?

The Duggar family rose to national prominence through their TLC reality series 19 Kids and Counting, which aired from 2008 until its cancellation in 2015. Led by Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, the family is known for its affiliation with the Institute in Basic Life Principles (IBLP), a fundamentalist Christian organization that has been widely criticized for promoting authoritarian, patriarchal, and often extreme views. The Duggars’ TV brand was initially built on their strict adherence to modest dress codes, courtship-based relationships, homeschooling, and rejection of mainstream media. But controversy—including the sexual abuse scandal involving eldest son Josh Duggar—ultimately dismantled their television empire. Jinger Duggar, the sixth child in the family, has since become one of the most vocal in distancing herself from the doctrines of her upbringing. Her 2023 memoir Becoming Free Indeed chronicles her journey of spiritual deconstruction, where she challenges many of the beliefs instilled in her during childhood. “Fear was a huge part of my childhood,” Jinger told People in a 2023 interview. “I thought I had to wear only skirts and long dresses to please God. Music with drums, places I went or the wrong friendships could bring harm.” Jinger and Jeremy now live in Los Angeles, where Jeremy is completing theological studies and the couple focuses on raising their two daughters outside the media circus that once defined Jinger’s early life.

Rebuilding After Crisis

The candid confession on their podcast marks another moment of vulnerability for the couple, who have increasingly used their platform to advocate for transparency and healing—especially for those coming out of high-control religious environments. Though Jeremy did not specify whether the “betrayal” came from within the Duggar family or another personal relationship, the broader context of their spiritual reexamination and departure from IBLP teachings suggests a major rift with their past. “You start thinking about: What are we doing with our lives? What does God have for us?” Jeremy said on the podcast. Despite these challenges, the Vuolos have emerged as one of the most grounded and publicly introspective pairs from the Duggar family orbit. Their podcast routinely tackles topics like marriage, parenting, faith, and life after fundamentalism—all framed through their evolving theological lens. As of now, neither Jeremy nor Jinger has provided additional details about the betrayal, but the emotional weight of their conversation hints at a pivotal turning point in their early relationship.
