Kavinsky Death Investigation
French electronic music producer and DJ Kavinsky has died at the age of 50 after being found dead at his home in Paris, according to French authorities. Kavinsky, whose real name was Vincent Belorgey, rose to international fame with his hit song “Nightcall,” which became synonymous with the 2011 film Drive and helped define the modern synthwave genre.
Investigation Underway
Paris prosecutors confirmed Belorgey was found unresponsive at his home Tuesday evening. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, but officials said there were no immediate signs of foul play. French media reported that investigators are examining whether he may have suffered a stroke after experiencing headaches in the days before his death. An official cause of death has not been released.
The Artist Behind “Nightcall”
Kavinsky began his music career in the mid-2000s after previously working as an actor. Influenced by 1980s films, video games and electronic music, he created a signature retro-futuristic sound that became a defining style within the synthwave movement.
His breakthrough came with “Nightcall,” released in 2010. The song reached a global audience after it was featured in the opening sequence of Drive, starring Ryan Gosling. The track’s haunting vocals and nostalgic synthesizers made it one of the most recognizable electronic songs of the decade.
Kavinsky later collaborated with several major artists, including The Weeknd on the song “Odd Look.” He released his debut album, OutRun, in 2013, followed by Reborn in 2022.
Olympic Performance Introduced Him to a New Generation
Kavinsky’s career experienced a major resurgence in 2024 when he performed “Nightcall” during the closing ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games alongside French indie rock band Phoenix and Belgian singer Angèle. The performance drew international attention and introduced his music to a new generation of listeners, sending the song back up the music charts in France.
Tributes Follow His Death
Following the announcement of his death, tributes poured in from fans, fellow musicians and public officials. French President Emmanuel Macron praised Kavinsky’s contributions to French electronic music and described him as an artist whose work reached audiences around the world.
Although Kavinsky released only two studio albums during his career, his influence on electronic music extended far beyond his catalog. His cinematic sound, inspired by vintage synthesizers and 1980s pop culture, helped shape the synthwave genre and left a lasting mark on modern electronic music.
