Viktor Hovland captured one of the most dramatic victories of the PGA Tour season on Monday morning, defeating Scottie Scheffler in a one-hole playoff to win the Travelers Championship after the world’s No. 1 player narrowly missed a short birdie putt that would have extended the duel.
The playoff, delayed overnight after darkness halted Sunday’s final round, delivered a thrilling finish worthy of the tournament’s dramatic conclusion. Hovland calmly rolled in a 7-foot birdie putt on the par-4 18th before Scheffler’s 4-foot birdie attempt slid past the left edge of the cup, handing the Norwegian star the title.
It was Hovland’s 10th professional victory worldwide and his eighth on the PGA Tour, marking his first win since capturing the Valspar Championship in March 2025.
Hovland entered the back nine on Sunday trailing Scheffler by two shots but steadily chipped away at the deficit with clutch shot-making under mounting pressure. As daylight faded, Scheffler showed why he remains the game’s top-ranked player by sinking a nervy 8-foot par putt in near darkness on the 18th hole to force a playoff.
The pair returned Monday morning for one final hole before a packed gallery eager to witness the conclusion.
Neither player blinked off the tee, both finding the center of the fairway on the closing hole. Scheffler struck the first impressive approach, landing his ball within birdie range as approximately 3,000 spectators surrounding the green erupted in cheers.
The Norwegian fired an even better approach to just six feet, setting up a slippery downhill birdie putt with significant left-to-right break. His putt barely caught the inside edge of the cup, sending the crowd into celebration and putting enormous pressure on Scheffler.
Facing a 4-foot birdie attempt to continue the playoff, Scheffler’s putt caught too much of the left edge and rolled past, ending the tournament in heartbreaking fashion.
Despite the disappointment, Scheffler continued another remarkably consistent season. The Travelers Championship marked his fourth runner-up finish of the year after opening 2026 with a victory at The American Express.
While another title slipped away, Scheffler once again demonstrated the steady brilliance that has kept him atop the world rankings throughout the season.
The playoff featured an energetic international atmosphere rarely seen at a PGA Tour event.
A group of Norwegian supporters, fresh from attending FIFA World Cup matches in nearby Boston, arrived wearing their national soccer jerseys and loudly chanted “Hov-land! Hov-land!” as their countryman prepared to play.
American fans quickly answered with booming chants of “Scot-tie Scheff-ler!” creating a spirited back-and-forth that added to the tension surrounding every shot.
The friendly rivalry carried extra significance, as Norway’s national soccer team was preparing to travel to Dallas Scheffler’s hometown for its next World Cup match.
For Hovland, the Travelers Championship represents another milestone in an already impressive career. After battling through inconsistency over the past year, the 28-year-old delivered one of the finest closing stretches of his career, erasing a two-shot deficit before holding his nerve against the world’s best player.
Winning in a playoff over Scheffler only adds to the significance of the triumph, reinforcing Hovland’s place among golf’s elite as the PGA Tour season continues toward its biggest events.
