Sovereignty, the 2025 Horse of the Year, reminded the racing world of his championship form Saturday afternoon at Saratoga Race Course, powering down the stretch to a commanding 4 3/4 length victory in the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney Stakes.
The victory marked Sovereignty’s first win against older horses and provided a much-needed rebound in his third start of the 2026 campaign. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott and ridden by regular jockey Junior Alvarado, the son of Into Mischief overcame a slow start and a significant deficit before taking control in the stretch.
After finishing second as the odds on favorite behind White Abarrio in April’s Grade 2 Oaklawn Handicap, Sovereignty disappointed again in June’s Grade 1 Stephen Foster at Churchill Downs, finishing fourth on a sloppy track.
Saturday’s Whitney presented a different challenge. On a hot and muggy Saratoga afternoon, Sovereignty was not the favorite for the first time in five races. He went off at 2-1, behind Magnitude, who was the 9-5 favorite.
The race began with Nitrogen immediately taking the lead, while Magnitude settled about a length behind. The opening fractions of 23.43 seconds for a quarter-mile and 46.27 for a half-mile established a solid pace.
Sovereignty and Alvarado, meanwhile, were content to sit well off the leaders in fifth. At one point, the champion was 8 1/2 lengths behind the pace, and after six furlongs in 1:09.65, he still had approximately seven lengths to make up.
Rather than panic, Alvarado gradually began asking Sovereignty for more. Sovereignty swung wide around the far turn alongside Baeza and quickly separated himself from that rival. As the field entered the stretch, the champion had surged into contention and put his head in front.
From there, Sovereignty showed why he was named Horse of the Year in 2025. He reached the mile in 1:35.05 and continued to accelerate through the stretch, opening up on the field before crossing the finish line in 1:47.91 over a fast track.
Nitrogen, who had done the early work on the front end, drifted outward in the stretch but continued fighting to finish second.
She returned $5.80 to win-place? and $4.24 to place, while Antiquarian rallied four wide to secure third, five lengths behind the winner, paying $5.14 to show. Baeza, who once again hopped at the start, finished fourth, followed by Tiztastic.
Magnitude, the race favorite, tracked the pace from the inside but faded badly in the stretch and finished sixth, 15 1/4 lengths behind Sovereignty. White Abarrio, who had defeated Sovereignty in the Oaklawn Handicap earlier this year, raced wide throughout and finished last of the seven-horse field, beaten 17 1/2 lengths.
The Whitney victory improved Sovereignty’s career record to 7 wins, 3 seconds and 1 third from 12 starts. More importantly, the victory restored momentum to a horse who entered Saratoga looking to erase the disappointment of his first two starts of the season.
Sovereignty earned $550,000 for the victory, pushing his career earnings to $6,876,550. After struggling to find his best form against older competition earlier this year, Sovereignty delivered a performance worthy of his championship status at one of the sport’s most historic venues.
With a powerful late charge, patience from Alvarado and the steady guidance of Mott, the 2025 Horse of the Year once again looked like one of the most formidable horses in the sport.
