The flight was operated by United Airlines using a Boeing 787 9 Dreamliner. The plane was carrying 256 passengers and 12 crew members when the issue occurred shortly after departure. Air traffic control audio reviewed by national outlets indicates the crew shut down one of the engines and continued receiving warning indications. Passenger Describes Seeing Flames
One passenger told Good Morning America that moments after takeoff the plane experienced what he described as a sudden jolt followed by visible flames coming from the left engine. “A few minutes after takeoff there was sort of this very bumpy feeling,” the passenger said in an interview. He added that he could see what appeared to be fire from his window seat, intensifying concern inside the cabin. Flight attendants instructed passengers to leave all belongings behind as they deployed emergency slides. Video from the scene shows travelers descending the slides and gathering on the tarmac while airport fire crews surrounded the aircraft.
Evacuation and Response
The evacuation occurred after the aircraft came to a stop on a taxiway. According to officials, there were no serious injuries. A small number of passengers were treated for minor cuts and scrapes. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to the scene and inspected the engine area.
