Pete Davidson Opens Up About Drug Use
Pete Davidson is opening up about one of the darkest periods of his life, revealing that he was struggling with heavy drug use while he was in a highly publicized relationship with Kim Kardashian. The comedian and actor recently discussed his past substance use, sobriety and the intense pressure surrounding his personal life. Davidson said that during the period when he was dating Kardashian, he was dealing with drug problems while simultaneously navigating an unprecedented level of public attention.
Davidson Described The Kardashian Lifestyle As Overwhelming
Davidson and Kardashian began dating after meeting while working on Saturday Night Live in 2021. Their relationship lasted about nine months and became one of the most heavily scrutinized celebrity romances of that period. They split in August 2022. Looking back, Davidson said Kardashian herself was respectful of his boundaries and that he has no animosity toward her. However, he said the constant attention surrounding her family and lifestyle was difficult for him while he was struggling with his own personal issues. Davidson explained that Kardashian respected his boundaries and that he was never pressured into participating in anything he did not want to do. He also described the reality of being constantly followed, surrounded by security and watched by the public as particularly difficult while he was dealing with personal struggles. Davidson has continued to speak positively about Kardashian and has indicated that the two remain on good terms.
He Revealed The Extent Of His Drug Use
Davidson also provided a more detailed account of his substance use, describing a period in which he was consuming multiple drugs on a daily basis. He said he was using ketamine, LSD, mushrooms, nitrous oxide, marijuana and pills. Davidson said his drug use eventually became so severe that the substances stopped producing the effects he was seeking. He described reaching a point where he felt high even when he was not taking drugs, something that made him realize his substance use had become a serious problem.
The 2023 Period Became A Breaking Point
Davidson identified the summer of 2023 as a particularly difficult period. After working on his autobiographical series Bupkis, he said he was forced to confront painful parts of his past while also dealing with major changes in his professional life. He ultimately sought treatment after a conversation with his mother, Amy. Davidson has previously discussed his experiences with rehabilitation and acknowledged that earlier attempts had not resulted in the same commitment to sobriety. This time, Davidson said he understood that he needed to make the decision for himself and take responsibility for changing his life.
Davidson Says His Life Has Changed
Davidson now says he has been free from hard drugs for more than two years and has also stopped using marijuana. Fatherhood has also become a major motivation for Davidson. He and Elsie Hewitt welcomed their daughter, Scottie, in December 2025. Davidson has said becoming a father fundamentally changed how he views his career, fame and personal priorities. He has described his daughter as an important reason for maintaining the changes he has made and focusing less on outside validation.
His Comments Put His Kardashian Relationship In A Different Context
Davidson’s latest revelations provide additional context for a period of his life that was already under extraordinary public scrutiny. His relationship with Kardashian coincided with intense media attention, online harassment and public conflict involving Kardashian’s former husband, Kanye West. Davidson has previously spoken about the impact of West’s public attacks during the relationship. In discussing his own struggles, however, Davidson has emphasized that Kardashian herself was not responsible for the difficulties he experienced. His comments suggest that his substance use and personal struggles were part of a much larger battle that extended beyond his relationship with Kardashian. Today, Davidson says he and Kardashian remain on good terms. His latest discussion also sheds light on how difficult that period was for him personally and how his recovery has changed his life since then.
