Surgeon Accused of Rape
“A man entrusted to heal stands accused of horrific violence,” said Manhattan prosecutors as they charged a well-known New York City surgeon with rape and sexual assault at gunpoint inside his apartment.
The Allegations
Dr. Maurizio Miglietta, a 56-year-old trauma surgeon and professor, was arrested this week and charged with multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, and unlawful imprisonment. According to prosecutors, the alleged attack took place after the victim, a woman in her 30s, visited Miglietta’s Upper East Side apartment seeking career advice. Once there, prosecutors say, Miglietta allegedly brandished a gun, forced the woman into his bedroom, and raped her. The encounter reportedly lasted several hours, and authorities say the woman managed to escape and immediately called 911.
The Defendant’s Background
Miglietta is a well-known figure in New York’s medical community. He has served as a trauma surgeon at several prominent hospitals and previously held academic appointments at top universities. His reputation in trauma medicine, including leadership in emergency surgery programs, had earned him national recognition before the allegations surfaced. The shocking charges have sent waves through the medical and academic community, where colleagues described him as “brilliant but intense.” Following his arrest, the institutions affiliated with Miglietta have suspended him pending the outcome of the investigation.
Prosecutors Detail the Attack
At Miglietta’s arraignment, prosecutors described a “premeditated act of violence” that they say exploited the victim’s trust. Assistant District Attorney Meghan Hast told the court the victim believed she was meeting the doctor to discuss professional opportunities, only for the encounter to turn violent. “She went there seeking mentorship,” Hast said. “Instead, she was met with a firearm and terror.” Miglietta pleaded not guilty to all charges. His attorney, speaking briefly outside the courthouse, claimed the allegations were “completely false” and vowed to fight them in court.
Community and Institutional Fallout
The case has sparked outrage and disbelief in New York’s medical community, particularly among female professionals who say the story underscores ongoing concerns about power dynamics and exploitation in academic and hospital settings. One medical student, speaking anonymously to NBC New York, said the allegations have “rattled a lot of women who looked up to people like him for guidance.” Hospitals and medical schools associated with Miglietta have launched internal reviews and are cooperating with law enforcement.
Ongoing Investigation
Prosecutors have requested an order of protection for the alleged victim and are reviewing additional evidence, including text messages and surveillance footage from the area near Miglietta’s apartment. Investigators are also looking into whether there may be other potential victims. If convicted, Miglietta faces decades in prison.
