Miguel Vargas then delivered the biggest blow of the inning, ripping a two out single into left field off reliever Hunter Gaddis to give Chicago a two run lead. The White Sox had an opportunity to hold on and strengthen their position atop the division, but Cleveland’s bullpen and offense combined to keep the Guardians within striking distance.

Cade Smith Keeps Cleveland Alive

Cade Smith played a critical role in preserving Cleveland’s opportunity to mount its comeback. The Guardians closer recorded five outs on only 16 pitches, allowing the offense to remain within reach of Chicago. Smith improved to 6-1 and, because of his efficient outing, should be available when the Guardians and White Sox meet again Wednesday.

Cleveland’s comeback was especially significant given the division standings. Chicago has held at least a share of first place since July 4 despite losing at least 100 games in each of the previous three seasons. Now, the White Sox enter Wednesday’s finale with their lead trimmed to just a half-game.

Guardians Look to Complete the Series Comeback

The Guardians will send rookie left-hander Parker Messick to the mound for Wednesday’s series finale. Messick enters with an 11-9 record and a 2.51 ERA and is 1-1 in his career against Chicago. The White Sox have yet to announce their starter. With Cleveland now just a half game behind Chicago, Wednesday’s finale carries major significance in a tightening AL Central race.
