Seahawks Wins Super Bowl Rematch

The Seattle Seahawks overcame an early injury to quarterback Sam Darnold, a stagnant offense and a 10-point deficit to defeat the New England Patriots 13-10 on Wednesday night in a dramatic Week 1 Super Bowl rematch. Seattle’s defense took over late, while backup quarterback Drew Lock made several key plays to lead two fourth-quarter scoring drives and give the Seahawks a memorable victory on a night when their Super Bowl banner was raised.

Darnold Injured on Opening Drive

The excitement surrounding Seattle’s banner-raising ceremony quickly turned to concern when Darnold left the game with a hip injury during the opening drive. Darnold came up limping after taking a third-down sack from Dre’Mont Jones and immediately went to the sideline medical tent before heading to the locker room.

Lock, who threw only three passes last season, entered the game and struggled initially to get Seattle’s offense moving. The Seahawks managed only a field goal through the first three quarters as New England’s defense kept the home team out of the end zone.

Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald said initial tests indicated that Darnold had not suffered a broken bone, calling the early news positive.

Seahawks Defense Takes Over

While Seattle’s offense struggled, the defense kept the Seahawks within striking distance. The Patriots had taken a 10-0 lead, but Seattle finally began to find its rhythm in the second half.

The Seahawks cut the deficit with a field goal in the third quarter before their defense created the turnover that changed the game. Nehemiah Pritchett intercepted Patriots quarterback Drake Maye, setting up Lock and the Seattle offense.

Lock then delivered one of the biggest plays of the night, connecting with Jaxon Smith-Njigba on a 45-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-1 to tie the game at 10-10.

Julian Love intercepted Maye on New England’s next possession, giving Seattle another opportunity. Jason Myers converted a 26-yard field goal to put the Seahawks ahead 13-10.

Maye Throws Three Fourth-Quarter Interceptions

Maye, who finished as the MVP runner-up last season, had a chance to rescue the Patriots late. After throwing his first two interceptions, he guided New England into position to either tie the game or take the lead during the final minute. Seattle’s defense, however, delivered one final blow.

Josh Jobe made a toe-tapping interception in the end zone to end the Patriots’ comeback attempt and preserve the 13-10 victory. The Seahawks finished the night having scored only six points through the first three quarters before their offense and defense combined to produce the late comeback.

Patriots Strike First

New England controlled much of the first half despite also struggling offensively. The Patriots scored the only touchdown of the opening two quarters after Jobe was called for pass interference against offseason acquisition A.J. Brown on a deep flea-flicker attempt.

Maye took advantage of the penalty on the following play, finding rookie Eli Raridon for a 2-yard touchdown that gave New England a 7-0 advantage.

The Patriots added another three points early in the second half after Seattle’s Chazz Surratt was flagged for roughing the punter. The penalty helped set up Andy Borregales’ 50-yard field goal, extending New England’s lead to 10-0.

Lock Provides a Signature Moment

Lock’s performance became the story of Seattle’s comeback. The veteran quarterback struggled for much of the game but delivered when the Seahawks needed him most.

After spending much of his career as a backup, Lock stepped into the starting role following Darnold’s injury and helped engineer the comeback. He originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick by Denver in 2019, winning eight starts in three seasons with the Broncos before joining Seattle in the Russell Wilson trade.

Lock later left Seattle to serve as a backup with the New York Giants before returning to the Seahawks last season. On this night, he produced the type of late-game performance that could become one of the more memorable moments of his career.

Seahawks Celebrate Super Bowl Banner With Another Win

The game began with a ceremony celebrating Seattle’s championship, as the Seahawks raised their Super Bowl banner and played highlights on the video board for the home crowd.

It marked the third Super Bowl rematch to take place during Week 1, with the previous such matchup occurring in 2016 when the Denver Broncos celebrated their championship with a victory over the Carolina Panthers.

Seattle’s latest victory gave the home crowd another reason to celebrate. The Seahawks were outplayed for much of the night, lost their starting quarterback early and entered the fourth quarter trailing 10-3. Yet their defense created turnovers, Lock made critical throws and Seattle finished with a 13-10 comeback victory.

Week 2 Action for Patriots and Seahawks

The Patriots will return home to host the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sept. 20 as they look to rebound from the season-opening loss. The Seahawks will travel to Arizona on Sept. 20 to face the Cardinals, hoping to build on a dramatic opening-night victory that showcased the resilience of their defense and the late-game playmaking of Lock.
