Brett James Dies in Plane Crash
The country music world is mourning the loss of Grammy-winning songwriter Brett James, who died Thursday, September 18, in a small plane crash in Franklin, North Carolina. James, 57, was one of three people killed when a Cirrus SR22T aircraft went down near Iotla Valley Elementary School. Federal officials confirmed there were no survivors.
The Crash
The aircraft, registered to James, had departed from John C. Tune Airport in Nashville earlier that day before crashing around 3:00 p.m. local time. Authorities identified the other victims as Melody Carole and Meryl Maxwell Wilson. The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, and it remains unclear whether James himself was piloting the plane. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched a joint investigation.
A Celebrated Career
Brett James was a cornerstone of Nashville’s songwriting community, with more than 500 songs recorded by major artists and over 110 million albums sold featuring his work. His breakout came in 2001 with Jessica Andrews’ No. 1 hit “Who I Am.” But his most celebrated contribution came in 2005 with Carrie Underwood’s “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” which earned him a Grammy Award for Best Country Song. In addition to his Grammy, James was named ASCAP’s Country Songwriter of the Year twice, in 2006 and 2010. He also earned induction into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential figures in modern country music.
From Medicine to Music
Born in Columbia, Missouri, in 1968, James originally pursued a career in medicine. He studied at Baylor College of Medicine but left to follow his passion for songwriting in Nashville. That leap of faith defined his life and career, transforming him into one of the most prolific songwriters of his generation.
Tributes Pour In
Tributes have poured in from across the country music community. Industry organizations including ASCAP and the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame issued statements honoring his contributions, while artists he worked with shared their grief on social media. James was remembered not just for his chart-topping hits, but also for mentoring younger songwriters and helping shape the next wave of Nashville talent.
An Irreplaceable Loss
The death of Brett James is a devastating blow to the music industry. His songs crossed genres and touched millions of listeners worldwide. While investigations continue into the cause of the crash, what remains certain is that Nashville has lost one of its most defining creative voices.
