Truck Attack at Michigan Synagogue Leaves Suspect Dead, Raises Fears of Targeted Violence
A dramatic and disturbing act of violence unfolded Thursday afternoon at one of the largest synagogues in the United States, when a suspect drove a truck into Temple Israel in suburban Detroit before being killed at the scene. What Happened Inside Temple Israel
According to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, police responded around 1:35 p.m. to reports of gunfire near Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan. Investigators say the suspect drove directly through the synagogue’s doors and into an interior hallway, triggering chaos inside the building. Security personnel quickly confronted the individual.
Conflicting accounts have emerged about how the suspect died. Some law enforcement sources indicated he exited the vehicle with a rifle and was shot by synagogue security. However, Bouchard said the suspect was found dead inside the truck and suggested investigators are still determining whether he was killed by gunfire or died by suicide.

Authorities also revealed that the vehicle may have contained mortar type explosives that ignited upon impact, creating smoke conditions severe enough to hospitalize approximately 30 responding officers for smoke inhalation. Despite the dramatic scene, synagogue officials confirmed that roughly 140 students and staff members inside the building, including those in an early childhood education center, were safely accounted for.

The FBI has taken the lead in the investigation and described the attack as a “targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.” Officials identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a Lebanese-born U.S. citizen who immigrated to the United States in 2011 through a marriage-based visa and became naturalized in 2016.

However, sources within Michigan’s Lebanese American community told reporters the suspect had recently suffered devastating personal losses after an airstrike in Lebanon reportedly killed multiple family members roughly ten days before the attack.
According to those sources, Ghazali had withdrawn from work and social life following the tragedy and had been living alone after a divorce. Shortly before the attack, he allegedly contacted his ex-wife and told her to take care of their children, a call that raised alarm among relatives.
Investigators are working to confirm whether the emotional trauma played any role in the violence.

Early reports suggested there may have been a second person inside the vehicle. A national Jewish security organization initially indicated two suspects were involved, though local authorities later said evidence currently points to a lone attacker. The vehicle used in the incident was reportedly registered to another individual in the Dearborn area, further complicating the investigation. Officials also noted that the suspect’s body was badly burned, making identification more difficult.

At a public event marking Women’s History Month, President Donald Trump called the incident a “terrible thing” and pledged that federal authorities would fully investigate.
