Tragic Events Unfold Hours Apart
The first incident occurred shortly before noon when a 79-year-old man became unresponsive while snorkeling at the beach. The second incident took place around 2:30 p.m. when a 74-year-old woman was found unresponsive in a lagoon pool. Despite immediate CPR efforts by a lifeguard, she was also pronounced dead at the scene. Both victims were American nationals traveling with family members. The man had boarded the Carnival Mardi Gras from Port Canaveral, Florida, while the woman was aboard the Carnival Elation from Jacksonville, Florida.
Celebration Key: A New Destination
Celebration Key, dubbed the “Key to Paradise,” opened on July 19, 2025, as an exclusive destination for Carnival guests. The resort features expansive lagoons, an infinity pool, numerous bars and restaurants, and various recreational offerings. It is designed to accommodate two cruise ships simultaneously, with plans for future expansion.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force has initiated investigations into the circumstances surrounding both drownings. Autopsies are scheduled to determine the exact causes of death. In a statement, Carnival Cruise Line said, “Our lifeguards and medical team responded to two separate emergency incidents at Celebration Key on Friday — one in the lagoon and one at the beach. Sadly, both guests have passed away.”
