Virginia Tech Never Trails in 76-66 Victory Over Florida State

Virginia Tech secured a much-needed ACC win on Wednesday night, never trailing in a 76-66 victory over Florida State. Tobi Lawal led the Hokies with a dominant performance, scoring 17 points and grabbing 13 rebounds, while Jaden Schutt added 16 points to help snap Virginia Tech’s recent struggles in conference play.

The game began with an exchange of baskets, but after Lawal scored his second field goal to put Virginia Tech ahead 4-2, the Hokies never looked back. The Seminoles struggled offensively in the first half, as Virginia Tech’s defensive pressure stifled their scoring opportunities.

Rodney Brown Jr.’s layup at the 9:54 mark in the first half extended the Hokies lead to 20-9, and moments later, Ben Burnham electrified the home crowd with a powerful dunk to push the advantage to 25-11. Virginia Tech continued to build momentum, closing the first half on a 10-4 run to take a commanding 35-15 lead into the break.

Florida State’s offensive woes continued into the second half, as the Seminoles didn’t reach the 20-point mark until Taylor Bol Bowen drained a three-pointer two-and-a-half minutes after halftime. Bowen, who finished with 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting, was a bright spot for the Seminoles, finishing just one rebound shy of a double-double.

The Seminoles gradually chipped away at the deficit, using a 28-14 surge over a seven-minute span to cut the lead to 49-43 after a layup by Daquan Davis with 8:08 remaining. But Virginia Tech responded immediately, as Ben Hammond, Schutt, and Lawal each knocked down three-pointers in quick succession to stretch the lead back to 58-45.

Florida State made one final push when Alier Maluk’s dunk trimmed the deficit to 61-52 with 4:09 left, but the Hokies maintained their composure and sealed the victory down the stretch.

Virginia Tech (9-12, 4-6 ACC) will look to carry its momentum into Saturday’s road matchup against in-state rival Virginia. Florida State (13-8, 4-6 ACC) will also be back in action on Saturday when it travels to face Boston College.

With this win, the Hokies gain a crucial ACC victory, while Florida State will look to bounce back and regain its footing in the competitive conference standings.
