Hillsborough Deputies Shot in Violent Ambush During Domestic Violence Response; Newly Released Bodycam and Drone Footage Shows Gun Battle
HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. — Newly released body camera and tactical drone footage is providing a chilling look at the moments two Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office deputies were critically wounded in what investigators describe as a calculated ambush while responding to a domestic violence investigation.
The shooting unfolded after deputies were dispatched following a woman’s dramatic escape from an armed ex-boyfriend she said had held her captive at gunpoint. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the woman fled directly to the Sheriff’s Office to report the alleged kidnapping and armed domestic violence, triggering an urgent search for the suspect. Authorities identified the suspect as 34 year old Christopher Demanchowski, a convicted felon with a prior felony conviction for evidence tampering dating back to 2013.
Tactical Drone Deployed Before Arrest Attempt
Investigators located Demanchowski at a residence and deployed a tactical drone to monitor the property before deputies attempted to move in and take him into custody. The aerial footage shows deputies cautiously positioning themselves around the home while gathering intelligence before initiating the arrest. However, the situation turned deadly within seconds.
Suspect Opens Fire Without Warning
According to investigators and the newly released body camera footage, Demanchowski launched a surprise attack as the first deputy arrived. As the deputy opened the door of his patrol vehicle, Demanchowski allegedly punched through a vehicle window with his hand to create a clear line of fire before immediately opening fire. The deputy was met with an intense barrage of gunfire almost instantly after exiting his patrol car, leaving little opportunity to seek cover.
Moments later, a second deputy arriving to assist was also ambushed. Authorities said rounds fired by Demanchowski penetrated the deputy’s patrol vehicle, striking the deputy despite the protection offered by the cruiser.
Third Deputy Ends the Threat
The newly released footage shows a third deputy approaching the scene from behind after hearing the gunfire. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the deputy observed Demanchowski actively firing at the wounded deputy and immediately engaged the suspect. The deputy fired multiple rounds, striking Demanchowski several times and ending the attack. Officials said the deputy’s actions prevented what could have become an even deadlier confrontation.
Two Deputies Seriously Wounded
Both injured deputies were rushed to a nearby hospital with life threatening injuries. Authorities said one deputy suffered a gunshot wound to the neck, while the second deputy was struck in the head. The Sheriff’s Office has not publicly released updated information regarding their long term recovery, but both survived the shooting after receiving emergency medical treatment. Demanchowski was also transported to a hospital, where he later died from injuries sustained during the exchange of gunfire.
Domestic Violence Calls Among the Most Dangerous
Law enforcement officials have long warned that domestic violence calls consistently rank among the most dangerous incidents officers respond to because emotions are often heightened, firearms are frequently present, and suspects may already be prepared for confrontation.
In this case, investigators say deputies were attempting to arrest a suspect accused of holding a woman against her will at gunpoint when they were met with an immediate and deadly ambush. The release of the body camera and drone footage offers one of the clearest visual accounts yet of how rapidly the encounter escalated and underscores the split second decisions deputies were forced to make under fire. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement continues to investigate the deputy involved shooting, which is standard procedure following any law enforcement use of deadly force. The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office has praised the responding deputies for their actions under extraordinary circumstances while continuing to support the two wounded deputies and their families.
