Luigi Mangione Court Hearing
Luigi Mangione is scheduled to return to a New York courtroom after a recent hearing in the murder case involving UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was conducted behind closed doors, raising new questions about what attorneys and the judge discussed outside public view.
The latest court appearance comes after a procedural mistake delayed a scheduled hearing by one day. Prosecutors acknowledged that they failed to properly notify federal jail officials that Mangione needed to be transported to court, preventing him from appearing as originally planned. Judge Gregory Carro subsequently adjourned the hearing until the following day.
The hearing has attracted significant attention because it follows a sealed proceeding held earlier this month. Judge Carro previously confirmed that the closed-door session took place at the request of the defense but did not publicly disclose the subject matter discussed. Court officials have also not released details regarding what specific issue prompted the confidential hearing.
Mangione, 28, has pleaded not guilty to charges stemming from the December 2024 shooting death of Thompson, the chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare. Prosecutors allege that Thompson was fatally shot outside a Manhattan hotel as he walked toward an investor conference. Authorities arrested Mangione several days later in Pennsylvania following a nationwide manhunt.
The case has become one of the most closely watched criminal prosecutions in the country. Investigators have alleged that evidence recovered during the investigation, including a 3D-printed firearm and writings attributed to Mangione, connect him to the killing. Defense attorneys have challenged portions of the evidence and continue to contest key aspects of the prosecution’s case. Last month, Judge Carro ruled that jurors may hear certain evidence that prosecutors say links Mangione to the shooting. The ruling was viewed as a significant victory for the prosecution ahead of trial.
Mangione faces both state and federal charges related to the case. Although some federal charges were dismissed earlier this year, removing the possibility of a death penalty prosecution, he still faces the prospect of spending the rest of his life in prison if convicted.
The upcoming hearing could provide further insight into unresolved pretrial issues as both sides prepare for trial. Court records indicate that jury selection and trial preparations remain underway, with the state murder case expected to move forward later this year.

Mangione is a Maryland native and former Ivy League student who became the focus of a nationwide investigation following Thompson’s killing in December 2024. He has consistently denied the allegations and entered not guilty pleas in both state and federal court proceedings.
