Democrats Turn on John Fetterman as Explosive Report Raises Questions About His Senate Work, Fox News Appearances and Israel Advocacy

Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman is facing one of the most serious political controversies of his first term after an extensive Wall Street Journal investigation portrayed the Democratic senator as increasingly disengaged from routine constituent and legislative responsibilities while devoting significant attention to conservative media appearances and his outspoken support for Israel.

The investigation, based on interviews with more than a dozen former staffers and colleagues as well as internal communications reviewed by the Journal, triggered an unusually public backlash from Pennsylvania Democrats. Former Democratic Rep. Conor Lamb, who lost to Fetterman in the 2022 Senate primary, explicitly called on him to resign, while Democratic Reps. Brendan Boyle and Chris Deluzio delivered blistering criticism of their fellow Pennsylvanian and raised the prospect of replacing him when his seat is next on the ballot in 2028.

The controversy goes beyond Fetterman’s ideological differences with portions of the Democratic Party. At the center of the reporting is a more fundamental question about whether Pennsylvania’s junior senator is consistently performing the constituent, committee and legislative work expected of a United States senator.

Paralyzed Veterans Arrived in Washington, Fetterman Reportedly Said He Was Sick

Among the most striking episodes reported by the Journal involved three paralyzed military veterans from rural Pennsylvania who traveled to Washington in June seeking Fetterman’s support for health care legislation. According to the Journal, the veterans arrived in wheelchairs for their scheduled meeting only to be informed that Fetterman would not see them. Fetterman reportedly told his staff he was not feeling well and suggested that something he had eaten may have upset his stomach.

Less than an hour later, however, Fetterman reportedly appeared at the office for a live Fox News interview concerning Israel and the conflict with Iran. The episode quickly became one of the most politically damaging portions of the investigation because it appeared to crystallize the broader criticism from former staffers: that Fetterman was willing to avoid routine constituent work while remaining available for national television appearances.

The Journal also reported broader concerns about Fetterman’s participation in committee work. During one stretch examined by the newspaper, Fetterman reportedly missed 11 of 12 full committee hearings involving several boards and commissions. Former aides also alleged that staff were sometimes instructed to make sure he was recorded as present at hearings even when he remained for only a minute or less.

Those allegations are particularly significant because they move the controversy beyond disagreements over Fetterman’s politics or personality and into questions about how he performs the basic responsibilities of his office.

Children’s Hospital Officials Received a Similar Response

The Journal also reported on internal communications involving representatives of Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, one of Pennsylvania’s most prominent medical institutions, who sought a meeting with Fetterman to discuss vaccine policy and Medicaid cuts.

According to the messages reported by the Journal and subsequently detailed by The Philadelphia Inquirer, Fetterman questioned why he needed to continue meeting with CHOP officials. After an aide explained the issues they wanted to discuss, Fetterman reportedly responded that he was not concerned and wrote that he was convinced they wanted “free trips to DC.” The episode attracted additional scrutiny because Fetterman had publicly opposed Republican-backed Medicaid cuts, meaning hospital officials were attempting to discuss an issue on which the senator had himself taken a prominent position.

The Journal also described other instances in which Pennsylvania constituents and officials reportedly struggled to secure Fetterman’s participation. State Sen. Anthony Hardy Williams said Fetterman was the only member of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation who refused to meet with Eastwick residents who traveled to Washington to discuss federal grant cuts affecting their flood prone Philadelphia neighborhood.

In another episode, Pennsylvania state Rep. Liz Hanbidge traveled to Washington for a scheduled meeting concerning homelessness and working class issues. According to the reporting, Fetterman skipped the meeting and instead met with former college basketball coach and outspoken pro-Israel advocate Bruce Pearl.

Taken together, the accounts present a pattern that former aides and Pennsylvania Democrats say raises questions about the senator’s priorities.

Fetterman Reportedly Balked at a Three Hour Funeral for Slain Police Officers

Another episode involved the 2025 funeral of three York County police officers killed in the line of duty. According to internal messages reported by the Journal, an aide informed Fetterman that the funeral would last approximately three hours. Fetterman reportedly responded with surprise at the length and said the duration “may be a nonstarter.” He ultimately did not attend. The incident carried additional political significance because Fetterman grew up in York County and has frequently presented himself as a supporter of law enforcement.

The controversy surrounding the funeral, the veterans and constituent meetings has consequently broadened the criticism beyond Fetterman’s positions on Israel or his relationship with Democratic leaders. His critics are increasingly arguing that the central issue is whether he is devoting sufficient time and attention to the ordinary responsibilities of representing Pennsylvania.

Fox News Has Become an Important Part of Fetterman’s Political Identity

Fetterman’s transformation since entering the Senate has been striking. He won the Democratic nomination in 2022 after building a national identity as an unconventional populist who was particularly popular with progressive voters. Since taking office, however, Fetterman has increasingly clashed with progressives, criticized fellow Democrats, supported several positions associated with Republicans and developed a noticeably warmer relationship with conservative media.

Fox News has become a recurring platform for Fetterman, particularly when discussing Israel, Iran, immigration and disagreements within the Democratic Party. Appearing on Fox News is not itself evidence that a senator is neglecting official responsibilities. Members of both parties routinely appear across television networks. The politically consequential allegation in the Journal’s reporting is more specific: that some media appearances were prioritized while constituent meetings, committee hearings or other official responsibilities were declined or skipped.

That distinction is important. The issue is not where Fetterman chooses to give interviews. It is whether media appearances are being prioritized over the work Pennsylvanians elected him to perform.

Israel Has Become One of Fetterman’s Defining Political Issues

No issue has contributed more to Fetterman’s estrangement from the Democratic left than Israel. Following the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023, Fetterman emerged as one of Israel’s strongest Democratic defenders in Washington. As criticism of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government and Israeli military operations intensified among Democrats, Fetterman remained firmly supportive of Israel and repeatedly challenged members of his own party.

His position became even more pronounced as American involvement in the confrontation with Iran expanded. Fetterman supported military action against Iran and argued that the United States’ commitment to Israel should remain unwavering. The divide reached another level in July 2026, when Fetterman said he would leave the Democratic Party if it formally became what he characterized as an “anti-Israel party.” He simultaneously said he remained a committed Democrat and was not planning an imminent party switch.

His comments followed a House vote on an amendment that would have prevented State Department funding from going to Israel. The measure failed 104-314, but 103 Democrats supported it, demonstrating the widening divide inside the party over U.S. policy toward Israel.

Fetterman’s voting record nevertheless remains predominantly Democratic across the full range of Senate business. He has repeatedly pointed out that he votes with his party on the overwhelming majority of legislation and nominations. His departures from the Democratic caucus have been considerably more visible on Israel, Iran, immigration, national security and selected Trump administration personnel.

That distinction matters because Fetterman has not simply transformed into a Republican senator. Instead, he has become an increasingly heterodox Democrat whose most high profile breaks with his party occur on some of the country’s most politically divisive issues.

The Journal Reported an Extraordinary Israeli Ambassador Episode

One of the more unusual details in the Journal investigation concerned Fetterman’s relationship with Israeli officials. According to the Journal, Fetterman was prepared to publish an opinion piece supporting Israel after a suggestion from Israel’s ambassador to the United States. The newspaper reported that staff members raised legal concerns about whether the arrangement could create problems involving advocacy on behalf of a foreign government, and the proposed article was ultimately blocked.

The episode does not establish that Fetterman was acting as an agent of Israel, and there is no public evidence demonstrating such a relationship. It does, however, add important context to criticism from Democrats who believe his advocacy for Israel has become unusually central to his Senate identity. That criticism exploded after publication of the Journal investigation.

Pennsylvania Democrats Are Now Attacking Fetterman Publicly

The reaction from Pennsylvania Democrats was unusually severe for elected officials criticizing a senator from their own party. Philadelphia Rep. Brendan Boyle called Fetterman a “disgrace” and accused him of failing to perform the job Pennsylvania voters elected him to do. Boyle had already called for Fetterman to “go” earlier in 2026 after the senator cast a decisive committee vote advancing Republican Sen. Markwayne Mullin’s nomination for secretary of Homeland Security.

Western Pennsylvania Rep. Chris Deluzio delivered similarly harsh criticism following the Journal investigation, citing what he described as Fetterman’s “laziness, disrespect, and willingness to carry water for a foreign government.” Deluzio said the behavior demonstrated that Fetterman lacked the sense of duty required for the office and suggested Pennsylvania voters could address the issue in 2028.

Former Rep. Conor Lamb went further and explicitly called for Fetterman’s resignation. Lamb, a Marine veteran and former federal prosecutor whom Fetterman defeated by more than 30 percentage points in the 2022 Democratic primary, wrote that Fetterman should quit and argued that his reported treatment of Pennsylvanians and the Senate office was insulting to constituents.

It is therefore accurate to report that Democrats are calling for Fetterman to leave office, but an important distinction remains: there is not currently a broad institutional demand from Senate Democratic leadership that Fetterman resign. Lamb issued the clearest resignation demand following the Journal investigation, while sitting Democratic lawmakers such as Boyle and Deluzio have attacked Fetterman’s performance and discussed removing him politically.

The Campaign Money Story Requires Important Context

Fetterman’s unwavering support for Israel has also intensified scrutiny of campaign contributions associated with pro Israel organizations and donors. That financial history is legitimate to examine, but the available records require careful interpretation.

Federal Election Commission records show that Fetterman’s authorized campaign committees reported approximately $76.34 million in total receipts covering 2017 through the end of the 2022 election cycle. Approximately $68.3 million came from individual contributions, demonstrating the enormous grassroots fundraising operation that helped power his successful Senate campaign.

His campaign also received support from donors and political organizations associated with pro Israel causes, including support connected to JStreetPAC, the political arm of J Street. J Street describes itself as pro Israel and pro peace but has historically supported a two-state solution and frequently disagreed with both AIPAC and the Netanyahu government.

This distinction is important because campaign finance trackers use different methodologies when calculating “pro Israel” contributions. Some totals include direct PAC contributions, while others incorporate earmarked or bundled donations from individuals associated with organizations or industries. Independent expenditures made by outside groups are another legally distinct category and should not be presented as money given directly to a candidate.

For that reason, precise claims that Fetterman personally received a particular six figure amount directly from “the Israel lobby” can be misleading unless the underlying methodology is clearly explained.

What can be established is that Fetterman’s campaign received support from pro Israel political networks while simultaneously raising tens of millions of dollars from a vastly broader donor base. Even expansive estimates of Israel-related political support represent a small percentage of the approximately $76.34 million reported by his authorized committees through the 2022 election.

Campaign contributions also do not establish causation. The existence of financial support from individuals or organizations sharing Fetterman’s views does not prove that those contributions caused his subsequent positions or establish a quid pro quo.

Calling Fetterman an “Israeli Shill” Goes Beyond What the Evidence Establishes

Political criticism of Fetterman’s relationship with Israel has become increasingly heated, particularly among progressive Democrats and critics of U.S. support for the Israeli government. There is substantial evidence supporting a narrower factual description: Fetterman has made support for Israel one of his defining political priorities, repeatedly broken with members of his own party over Israel and Iran, threatened to leave the Democratic Party if it formally becomes what he considers an anti-Israel party, and devoted significant public attention to defending the U.S.-Israel relationship.

There is also now a sitting Democratic member of Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation, Chris Deluzio, publicly accusing Fetterman of a “willingness to carry water for a foreign government.” Calling Fetterman an “Israeli shill,” however, would move beyond those documented facts and into political characterization. The phrase could imply that Fetterman is secretly controlled, paid or directed by Israel, and the publicly available evidence does not establish that.

The more consequential story is what can actually be documented: a Democratic senator elected on a Pennsylvania-focused populist image is now facing accusations from former aides and fellow Democrats that he has neglected constituent and legislative responsibilities while devoting significant attention to conservative media appearances and an unusually forceful defense of a foreign ally.

Staff Turnover Has Added to Questions About Fetterman’s Office

The latest investigation also arrives after years of unusually visible staff turmoil. Fetterman has experienced significant turnover among senior aides, including the resignation of chief of staff Cabelle St. John in May 2026. Axios reported at the time that former staffers had grown frustrated with Fetterman’s changing political identity, steadfast support for Israel and warmer relationship with President Donald Trump, as well as interpersonal issues inside the office.

Fetterman dismissed concerns about staff turnover and pointed to other Senate offices that he said had experienced higher turnover. The Journal’s latest reporting, however, is particularly damaging because some former employees are no longer merely describing ideological or workplace disagreements. They are alleging that they repeatedly struggled to persuade the senator to attend hearings, markups, constituent meetings and other routine events associated with the job.

A group identifying itself as former Fetterman staffers also launched a social media account following publication of the Journal story to publicize additional criticism of the senator. NOTUS reported that it verified the authenticity of the account’s ownership.

Fetterman’s Break With Democrats Has Been Building for Years

The latest controversy did not emerge in isolation. Fetterman’s relationship with parts of the Democratic Party has steadily deteriorated as he has broken with progressives over Israel, Iran, immigration, government funding and Trump administration nominees. He also met with Trump at Mar-a-Lago in January 2025, a meeting that attracted substantial attention at a time when most Democratic lawmakers were maintaining considerable political distance from the incoming president.

According to the Journal, when Fetterman was later informed that Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer was organizing a special Democratic conference call, Fetterman responded in an internal message that he did not care. Despite those clashes, Fetterman remains a member of the Democratic caucus and has repeatedly rejected speculation that he plans to become a Republican. Schumer has continued to describe him as an important member of the caucus, and the Journal reported that the two had dinner in August.

The contradiction has become central to Fetterman’s political identity. He can vote with Democrats on much of the Senate’s business while simultaneously functioning as one of the party’s most prominent internal critics.

Fetterman’s Health History Requires Careful Treatment

Fetterman’s health history inevitably appears in discussions surrounding his performance, but medical history should not automatically be conflated with allegations about his work habits. Fetterman suffered a stroke during the 2022 campaign and subsequently entered Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for treatment of clinical depression in 2023. Previous reporting has described concerns from former aides and associates about his health and behavior following his return to the Senate. Fetterman has maintained that he is healthy and capable of performing his duties.

Those issues should be separated from the central accountability question raised by the Journal investigation. The relevant question is not whether a senator has previously experienced a stroke or depression. It is whether the senator is currently performing the responsibilities of the office. The latest reporting raises that question through allegations involving missed meetings, committee attendance, interactions with constituents, internal communications and the allocation of the senator’s time rather than through his diagnoses themselves.

Fetterman’s 2028 Problem Was Already Developing Before This Report

Fetterman does not face Pennsylvania voters again until 2028, but Democratic maneuvering around his seat began well before publication of the Journal investigation. Axios reported in 2025 that prominent Pennsylvania Democrats were already considering potential primary campaigns against him. Boyle and Deluzio have both been discussed as possible candidates, while Lamb remains politically active after losing the 2022 Democratic primary.

Fetterman has not committed to seeking another term. His standing within the Democratic electorate has also deteriorated substantially. Polling reported by Axios earlier in 2026 showed a striking partisan inversion: Fetterman’s job performance received considerably stronger approval from Pennsylvania Republicans than from Pennsylvania Democrats.

That political reversal is remarkable for a politician who entered the Senate after becoming a national progressive celebrity.

The Larger Question Is Whether Fetterman Is Still Doing the Job Pennsylvania Elected Him to Do

The latest controversy strikes directly at the political identity that originally made Fetterman successful. His rise was built around authenticity, working class populism and the image of a politician unusually connected to ordinary Pennsylvanians. The allegations now confronting him are essentially the inverse of that brand: former aides and political colleagues describing a senator reluctant to meet constituents, disengaged from portions of committee work and increasingly interested in national media appearances and foreign policy.

Fetterman’s defenders can reasonably point out that ideological disagreement with the Democratic Party does not constitute neglect of office, appearing on Fox News is not misconduct, supporting Israel is a legitimate foreign policy position, and campaign contributions from political organizations do not establish corruption. Those distinctions matter.

But they do not resolve the central allegations contained in the Journal investigation. If the accounts from former staffers and the internal communications are accurate, the political problem facing Fetterman is not simply that he has moved away from progressives or become popular with some Republicans. It is that people who worked for him and Democratic officials from his own state are publicly questioning whether he is consistently carrying out the fundamental responsibilities of representing Pennsylvania.

For Fetterman, that may prove far more consequential than any ideological label. The fight surrounding Pennsylvania’s junior senator has therefore moved beyond whether John Fetterman is progressive, moderate, conservative, pro-Israel or a frequent Fox News guest. It has become a fight over whether John Fetterman is still doing the job Pennsylvania elected him to do.
