‘Wheel of Fortune’ Announcer Jim Thornton in Some Hot Water
Longtime Wheel of Fortune announcer Jim Thornton has been suspended by Sony Pictures Television following allegations involving an incident aboard an American Airlines flight.
According to initial reporting by TMZ and statements confirmed by American Airlines, the incident occurred May 14th aboard American Airlines Flight 1276. A fellow passenger reportedly raised concerns about Thornton with flight attendants during the flight.
When the plane arrived at Los Angeles International Airport, law enforcement officers met the aircraft and spoke with Thornton about the reported incident.
Sony Pictures Television subsequently confirmed that Thornton had been suspended from Wheel of Fortune while the allegations are investigated. The studio also said it was recasting the announcer’s role during the investigation.
“We have recently been made aware of allegations concerning Jim Thornton. He has been suspended from Wheel of Fortune, and we are recasting while we conduct a thorough investigation,” Sony Pictures Television said in a statement.
Thornton, however, strongly denies any wrongdoing. Through his attorney, the longtime broadcaster maintains that he was not arrested, was not charged with a crime and did not engage in illegal conduct.
His attorney said officers spoke with Thornton at LAX for five minutes or less before determining that no wrongdoing had occurred and allowing him to leave.
For now, the allegations remain just that: allegations. Sony Pictures Television has launched an investigation, while Thornton maintains that he did nothing wrong.
The situation puts a temporary cloud over the career of a broadcaster who has been a familiar voice on Wheel of Fortune. Until the investigation is completed, however, the exact circumstances surrounding the flight remain unresolved.
Passenger Allegedly Spots Pedo-Related Chatroom on Laptop
The details have become significantly more disturbing when TMZ published photographs allegedly taken by the passenger. The images reportedly show Thornton using his laptop while a website called “lifeline.chat” was open. According to multiple reports, the site is a chatroom intended for people discussing pedophilic thoughts, and messages visible on Thornton’s screen reportedly contained disturbing references involving minors. The photographs have become the central piece of evidence behind the controversy and appear to explain why Sony Pictures Television has taken disciplinary action against Thornton.
Reports indicate that timestamps visible in the photographs suggest the chatroom remained open for approximately 57 minutes. That detail has raised additional questions about exactly what Thornton was doing on the website and whether his presence there was intentional. However, the photographs themselves do not establish who authored the messages appearing on the screen, nor do they by themselves prove that Thornton viewed, downloaded or possessed child pornography. Those distinctions are important because the public allegations have moved considerably faster than the evidence establishing what Thornton actually did.
His Attorney Says…
Thornton’s attorney, Allison Hart, has offered a very different explanation. She says Thornton mistakenly accessed the website while looking for suicide-prevention and mental-health resources. According to his attorney, Thornton has been involved in suicide-prevention advocacy and was familiar with legitimate resources such as 988lifeline.org. Hart says Thornton was directed to what he believed was another mental-health-related website, but the site turned out to be something entirely different. Once he realized what the site contained, she says he immediately exited and never returned.
Hart has emphatically denied that Thornton engaged in illegal conduct. She says he did not knowingly view child pornography, did not download or consume illegal material and did not participate in any criminal activity. She also maintains that the website itself did not contain illegal child-sexual-abuse material. Most significantly, Thornton was questioned by law enforcement after the flight but was not arrested or charged. According to his attorney, officers spoke with him for five minutes or less, determined that no wrongdoing had occurred and released him.
For now, the central issue remains unresolved. There is evidence that Thornton was photographed with a controversial chatroom displayed on his laptop during an airplane flight, and that a passenger reported what she saw to airline personnel. There is also confirmation that law enforcement questioned Thornton after the plane landed. But there is currently no public evidence establishing that Thornton knowingly sought out child pornography, possessed illegal material or committed a crime. His attorney maintains that he inadvertently reached the website, immediately left after realizing what it was and was cleared by authorities.
Who Is Jim Thornton?
Jim Thornton has had a long broadcasting career stretching back more than four decades, well before he became the familiar voice of Wheel of Fortune. Born in Huntington, West Virginia, in 1965, Thornton attended Marshall University and began pursuing broadcasting while still in college. He started his professional career in 1983 at WOWK-TV in Huntington before moving to Los Angeles in 1984 at age 19.
After arriving in California, Thornton built his reputation primarily through radio and television news. He began as a traffic reporter and eventually worked his way into increasingly prominent broadcasting positions. By 1989, he had his own morning radio show in the San Fernando Valley, and in 1992 he was working nationally as a country-music DJ for Westwood One Radio Networks.
Thornton eventually became a familiar voice to Los Angeles radio listeners through KNX 1070 Newsradio, where he worked as a traffic reporter before becoming a full-time anchor. In 2005, he was promoted to afternoon drive news co-anchor, cementing his reputation as one of Southern California’s recognizable broadcast voices.
His distinctive voice also opened the door to voice-over and entertainment work. Thornton provided voice work for projects including Monsters, Inc., The Cleveland Show, Celebrity Deathmatch and video games including Hitman: Blood Money and Mafia II. He also briefly filled in as an announcer on The Price Is Right.
Thornton’s biggest break came in 2011, when he became the announcer for Wheel of Fortune following the death of longtime announcer Charlie O’Donnell in 2010. Thornton had auditioned for the position and was ultimately selected, bringing his deep radio voice to one of America’s most recognizable television programs.
For the next 15 years, Thornton became an integral part of the show. He worked alongside Pat Sajak and Vanna White for more than a decade and continued with White when Ryan Seacrest took over as host following Sajak’s retirement in 2024. Thornton also served as announcer for Celebrity Wheel of Fortune.
Where it All Stands
Interestingly, Thornton’s connection to Wheel of Fortune goes beyond simply reading introductions. He has been involved with the studio audience before tapings, helping warm up the crowd, and has occasionally taken on unusual duties. In 2023, he actually switched roles with Pat Sajak, temporarily hosting the bonus round while Sajak served as announcer.
That makes the current controversy particularly significant. Thornton isn’t some newcomer who briefly appeared on television. He built a roughly 40-year broadcasting career, spent decades working in Los Angeles radio and television, and had been the voice of Wheel of Fortune since 2011. Sony’s decision to suspend him therefore represents a major disruption to a career that had, until now, been defined largely by broadcasting and voice work.
To put it in context, the allegations currently surrounding Thornton should not be confused with a criminal conviction or even a criminal charge. His attorney says he was not arrested or charged, and recent reporting says authorities questioned him after the May flight and released him. Sony is conducting its own investigation, so the ultimate facts remain unresolved.
