Eight Hospitalized After Avianca Flight Diverts To Miami
Eight people were hospitalized after severe turbulence struck an Avianca flight traveling from Colombia, forcing the aircraft to divert to Miami International Airport. The incident prompted an emergency response after the plane landed in Miami, where medical personnel evaluated passengers who reported injuries during the turbulent flight. Several people were transported to local hospitals for further treatment. Severe turbulence can cause sudden changes in an aircraft’s movement, throwing passengers against seats, overhead compartments or other parts of the cabin, particularly when they are not wearing seat belts. Even when pilots follow standard safety procedures, unexpected turbulence can result in serious injuries.
Flight Diverted From New York Destination
Avianca Flight AV042 was traveling from Medellín, Colombia, to John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York when it encountered severe turbulence. The Airbus A320 diverted to Miami as a precaution and landed safely at approximately 3:30 a.m. Friday, October 9. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue transported eight people to hospitals. One person was taken to a trauma center, while seven others were transported to area hospitals. The full extent of their injuries was not immediately available. Avianca said six passengers and three cabin crew members were affected by the turbulence. The airline activated its emergency assistance procedures after landing and arranged onward travel to New York for passengers who were not injured.
Turbulence Can Cause Serious Injuries
Severe turbulence can occur without warning and cause passengers and crew members to be thrown from their seats. Aviation safety officials recommend keeping seat belts fastened whenever seated, even when the seat belt sign is off, to reduce the risk of injury. The cause of the turbulence had not been confirmed in the initial reports.
