Michael Lombardi, a prominent member of head coach Bill Belichick’s staff, has resigned as the general manager of the North Carolina football program amid an ongoing university investigation into a human resources complaint.

Lombardi had been placed on paid leave following a complaint filed by a former UNC front-office employee. According to reports, the investigation has since expanded, with attorneys speaking to North Carolina staff members, coaches and even coaches’ wives and girlfriends. Among the questions being examined are Lombardi’s involvement in hiring and firing decisions concerning female and minority employees.

North Carolina said Thursday that it will continue its investigation and “consider all appropriate corrective actions” based on the information uncovered. Lombardi previously participated in a 90-minute interview with UNC attorneys alongside his lawyer, Tom Mars. Mars has maintained that there was no merit to the allegations against his client.

High-Profile Role Under Belichick

Lombardi joined Belichick at North Carolina in December 2024, reuniting with the legendary coach after previously working with him in the NFL. The two were together with the New England Patriots from 2014 through 2016. Lombardi also has extensive front-office experience, having first joined the Cleveland Browns in 1987.

His arrival at Chapel Hill represented one of the more unusual moves in college football, as North Carolina sought to build an NFL style operation under Belichick. Lombardi’s $1.5 million annual salary made him the highest paid general manager at a public university when he was hired.

Controversies During His Time at UNC

Lombardi faced scrutiny several times during his tenure with the Tar Heels. In February 2025, he drew attention after declaring that North Carolina “consider ourselves the 33rd NFL team,” reflecting the program’s effort to adopt a professional style approach under Belichick.

He also made headlines in September 2025 when he informed the Patriots that their scouts would no longer have access to the Tar Heels’ program. His departure now adds another layer of uncertainty to a North Carolina program attempting to establish itself under one of the most accomplished coaches in football history.

Tar Heels Open Season With Victory

Lombardi was not with the team for North Carolina’s season opener in Ireland against TCU last weekend. Despite the off field turmoil, the Tar Heels opened the season with an impressive 15-10 victory over the Horned Frogs. The win also provided some redemption for North Carolina after TCU dominated the Tar Heels 48-14 in Belichick’s debut season.

While the football program begins its second season under Belichick, the investigation surrounding Lombardi remains ongoing.
