Cubs Rally in Ninth to Stun Marlins 5-4 Behind Clutch Hits from Hoerner and Turner

The Chicago Cubs staged a thrilling ninth-inning comeback to defeat the Miami Marlins 5-4 on Tuesday night at Wrigley Field, capped by a walk-off two-run double from veteran pinch-hitter Justin Turner.

Down 4-2 entering the bottom of the ninth, Chicago’s offense — which had been quiet with runners in scoring position all game — came alive when it mattered most. Nico Hoerner delivered a crucial RBI single to center, trimming the deficit to 4-3. Just two pitches later, Turner ripped a line-drive double into the left field corner, bringing home Vidal Bruján and Hoerner to seal the comeback victory.

The Cubs had struggled to cash in early opportunities, going 0-for-4 with runners in scoring position through the first eight innings. But in the ninth, they went 2-for-2 in clutch situations.

Rookie center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong had a standout night, collecting two hits and blasting his 11th home run of the season in the third inning. Catcher Carson Kelly also added two hits to the effort. Kyle Stowers got the Marlins on the board early with a solo homer in the second, while Connor Norby added a solo shot of his own in the seventh. Miami also got run-scoring contributions from Javier Sanoja (RBI groundout) and Jesús Sánchez (RBI single).

Miami carried a 4-2 lead into the final frame, but reliever Jesús Tinoco (2-1) couldn’t hold it. He allowed two hits, three runs — two earned — and a walk while recording just one out, suffering his first blown save of the season.

Cubs reliever Chris Flexen (1-0) earned the win, tossing two scoreless innings while giving up just one hit and striking out two.

Up Next: The series concludes Wednesday night with Miami left-hander Ryan Weathers (0-0) set to face Cubs right-hander Jameson Taillon (2-2, 4.53 ERA).

The win marked another resilient moment for a Cubs team that continues to fight in a tightly contested National League race.
