Deadly Crash On Palmetto Expressway
A fatal crash on the Palmetto Expressway in northwest Miami-Dade shut down all southbound lanes for hours Wednesday evening, creating a traffic nightmare during rush hour. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred just after 6 p.m. near Northwest 103rd Street when a white Audi sedan slammed into a concrete barrier and then collided with a Ford pickup truck. The Audi overturned on impact, ejecting both the driver and passenger. The front passenger, an adult woman, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, an adult man, was rushed to HCA Florida Kendall Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Authorities said the crash forced the closure of all southbound lanes of State Road 826 starting near Northwest 122nd Street. Traffic backups stretched for miles as emergency crews and investigators worked the scene. Drivers were left stranded for hours, and many were forced to take alternate routes through Hialeah Gardens and Miami Lakes. The roadway was not fully reopened until shortly after 9 p.m., nearly three hours after the crash.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released. Investigators are still working to determine what caused the Audi to lose control and whether factors such as speeding, impairment, or mechanical failure played a role. It remains unclear if the occupants were wearing seat belts, a detail that could help explain why both were ejected from the vehicle.
This crash adds to growing concerns about the safety of the Palmetto Expressway, one of Miami-Dade’s busiest and most congested roadways. With thousands of drivers traveling the corridor during peak hours, accidents in this stretch have ripple effects across the county. As the investigation continues, Florida Highway Patrol officials are urging drivers to remain cautious, emphasizing that one moment of error on a high-speed highway can quickly turn fatal.
