FDA Upgrades Publix Frozen Berry Recall to Highest Risk Level Over E. coli Concerns

Publix Frozen Berry Recall

The Food and Drug Administration has upgraded a recall involving certain GreenWise frozen blueberries and mixed berries sold at Publix stores to its highest risk classification, citing the potential for serious illness or death from E. coli contamination.

The FDA classified the recall as a Class I recall, the agency’s most serious category. The classification is used when there is a reasonable probability that consuming or being exposed to a recalled product could cause serious adverse health consequences or death.

The recall involves GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries and Whole Mixed Berries sold in 10 ounce and 48 ounce packages. Publix announced the broader recall on July 29 after health officials identified a potential connection between frozen blueberries and an ongoing multistate outbreak of E. coli O145.

Which Products Are Recalled?

Consumers should check their freezers for the following products:

GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 10 ounce
UPC: 41415-06453

GreenWise Organic Whole Blueberries, 48 ounce
UPC: 41415-12053

GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 10 ounce
UPC: 41415-06753

GreenWise Organic Whole Mixed Berries, 48 ounce
UPC: 41415-12153

The recalled products were distributed to Publix stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia. The products have expiration dates before February 9, 2028.

Publix has already removed the recalled products from sale. The FDA is advising consumers not to eat, sell or serve any of the affected berries.

E. coli Outbreak Has Sickened 12 People

The recall comes as federal and state health officials investigate an outbreak of E. coli O145 infections.

According to the FDA, 12 illnesses and four hospitalizations have been reported in Florida and Georgia. No deaths have been reported in connection with the outbreak. Illnesses began between May 11 and June 5, 2026.

Health officials identified frozen blueberries as a leading food item of interest after interviewing people who became sick. The investigation ultimately focused on GreenWise organic frozen blueberries sold at Publix.

E. coli O145 is a Shiga toxin producing strain of E. coli that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness. Symptoms can include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting. In some cases, infections can cause bloody diarrhea and progress to hemolytic uremic syndrome, a serious condition that can result in kidney failure.

What Consumers Should Do

The FDA is urging anyone who has the recalled berries in their freezer not to eat them.

Consumers should throw the products away or return them to the place of purchase for a refund. If the berries were removed from their original packaging and consumers cannot determine whether they are part of the recall, the FDA recommends throwing them away rather than taking the risk.

Consumers should also clean and sanitize any surfaces, containers or utensils that came into contact with the recalled berries. This is intended to reduce the possibility of cross contamination.

Anyone who consumed the recalled products and develops symptoms consistent with an E. coli infection should contact a health care provider.

The FDA and CDC investigation remains ongoing, and federal officials have indicated that additional products could be added to the advisory as investigators learn more.

The elevated Class I designation makes clear that consumers should take the recall seriously and check their freezers, particularly because the affected products may have expiration dates extending well into 2028.
