Tampa Bay Continues Its Push Toward the Postseason

The Tampa Bay Rays continued their strong September run Wednesday night, defeating the Atlanta Braves 7-2 to clinch the series against the National League East leaders.

Victor Mesa Jr. delivered two hits, including a home run, while Griffin Jax turned in another impressive performance on the mound. Jax allowed just two hits and one run over five innings as the Rays improved to 2-0 in the three-game series.

Following Tuesday night’s 7-1 victory, Tampa Bay has outscored Atlanta 14-3 through the first two games. The Rays also outhit the Braves 10-3 on Wednesday and stole three bases.

Mateo Sparks Three-Run Second Inning

Jorge Mateo provided the game’s early offensive spark with a two-run single during a three-run second inning that put Tampa Bay in control.

Mesa later added to the lead with his home run, which represented the Rays’ only extra-base hit of the night. Tampa Bay’s balanced offensive attack, however, proved more than enough against Atlanta. The Braves’ only run against Jax came on a fourth-inning home run by Drake Baldwin.

Rays Move Closer to Postseason Berth

The victory kept Tampa Bay four games ahead of the New York Yankees in the American League East. The Rays entered the night with a magic number of four to clinch their first postseason berth since 2023.

Tampa Bay’s continued success has put increasing pressure on the Yankees as the regular season winds down. The Rays have established themselves as one of the American League’s top teams and are now within striking distance of officially securing their postseason spot.

Braves’ Division Lead Shrinks

Atlanta also saw its National League East advantage over the Philadelphia Phillies shrink to three games following the loss.

Braves right-hander Reynaldo López struggled in his return from the injured list, allowing six runs over 4⅔ innings. López had missed 34 games while dealing with left knee inflammation and was making his first appearance since July 26.

Atlanta also made a roster move before the game, designating right-hander Elieser Hernández for assignment. Left-hander Bailey Falter was recalled and pitched two perfect innings with one strikeout. Right-hander Bryce Elder was placed on the 15-day injured list after undergoing right knee surgery Tuesday.

Final Game of the Series

The Rays and Braves will meet Thursday in the series finale. Atlanta is scheduled to send left-hander Martín Pérez to the mound, while Tampa Bay will counter with right-hander Nick Martinez.

Pérez enters the game with an 8-9 record and a 3.25 ERA, while Martinez has been one of Tampa Bay’s most reliable starters at 14-4 with a 3.04 ERA.

With the Rays closing in on a postseason berth, Thursday’s finale gives Tampa Bay another opportunity to strengthen its position atop the AL East and continue building momentum for October.
