Mets Survive Late Marlins Rally to Complete Sweep

The New York Mets survived a wild offensive battle Wednesday night, outslugging the Miami Marlins 15-14 to complete a three game series sweep. Francisco Lindor delivered the biggest blow with a three run homer during a six run seventh inning that put New York ahead for good, while Christopher Morel added a two run shot and finished a triple shy of the cycle.

The Mets appeared to be in control after building an 8-0 advantage and later taking a 15-9 lead, but Miami refused to go quietly. The Marlins scored twice in the eighth inning and mounted another furious rally in the ninth before New York finally secured the victory.

Mets Break Game Open in Seventh Inning

New York’s decisive seventh inning began after Miami reliever Josh Ekness struggled to find the strike zone. Ekness hit a batter and walked two before being replaced by Tyler Zuber without recording an out.

A.J. Ewing followed with a go-ahead sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. Morel and Luis Torrens then delivered RBI singles before Lindor connected off Zuber for his 18th home run of the season, a three run blast that extended the Mets’ advantage.

Daniel Duarte earned the victory after allowing one run over 1 2/3 innings of relief, improving to 2-0 on the season.

Marlins Rally Falls Just Short

Miami’s offense continued to battle throughout the game. Joe Mack hit a solo homer in the seventh, while Owen Caissie contributed a two run single in the eighth after hitting his 14th home run of the season earlier in the sixth.

The Marlins made things especially interesting in the ninth. Graham Pauley drove in a run with a single to cut the deficit to 15-11 before Griffin Conine delivered an RBI double. Conine then scored on Otto Lopez’s triple, bringing Miami within one run.

Jakob Marsee followed with a one out single, putting the potential tying run aboard, but Tobias Myers entered in relief of Nate Lavender and ended the threat. Myers struck out Caissie and retired Pauley on a pop fly to record his second save.

Marsee Leads 20-Hit Marlins Attack

Despite the loss, Miami’s offense produced an enormous night at the plate, collecting 20 hits. Marsee led the way with four hits and three RBI, while the Marlins received significant contributions throughout the lineup.

The offensive explosion came at a cost on the pitching side, with Miami using seven relievers. The Mets used six pitchers out of the bullpen in a game that lasted 3 hours, 38 minutes.

New York scored six runs in the second inning against Marlins starter Janson Junk, establishing the early advantage before Miami spent the rest of the night trying to climb back into the game.

Injury Adds to Mets’ Concerns

The Mets also lost Brett Baty during the game. Baty left after reaching on a single because of left knee pain and was replaced by Morel.

New York now turns its attention toward a weekend matchup with the Yankees. Right-hander Nolan McLean, who enters at 11-8 with a 3.06 ERA, is scheduled to start Friday for the Mets, while the Yankees had not yet announced their starter.

The Marlins will return home Friday to open a series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Miami and Los Angeles had not announced their starting pitchers for the series opener.

The Mets leave Miami with a sweep after surviving one of the wildest games of the season, while the Marlins are left to regroup after an offensive performance that produced 14 runs and 20 hits but still ended in a one run defeat.
