Late Game Dramatics in The Premier League
Transfer deadline day ended in widespread disappointment for fans of both clubs. The Toffees’ inaction was particularly concerning given Tuesday’s botched business left them with a threadbare squad and an unhappy manager. Everton manager David Moyes admitted he had “to live with disappointments” and called for his players to “muck in,” setting a resolute tone ahead of Sunday’s clash at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
High Drama in the Second Half
That resolve was put to the test on the pitch. Bryan Mbeumo had given Michael Carrick’s visiting Manchester United side the lead just a minute after half-time when he cut in from the right flank and curled a precise effort into the far corner. Everton responded through winger Tyrique George who made his loan move from Chelsea permanent in the summer who hammered home an 83rd-minute leveller to claim his first Toffees goal in his 15th appearance for the club.
United substitute Benjamin Šeško then looked to have snatched victory when he headed in from Luke Shaw’s cross in the 88th minute, aiming to score a late winner at Hill Dickinson Stadium for the second season running.
Stoppage-Time Heroics Salvage Unbeaten Start
Just five days after completing his move to Everton from French club Lyon, Ainsley Maitland-Niles had other ideas. The former Arsenal right-back came off the bench for his first Premier League appearance in over three years and delivered an instant impact. In the 96th minute less than 20 minutes after entering the pitch Maitland-Niles unleashed a stunning 25-yard strike into the top corner to seal a 2-2 draw.
The goal was only Maitland-Niles’s second in 110 Premier League appearances, coming nearly eight years after his first for Arsenal against Liverpool in December 2018. The sensational long-range effort capped off a frenetic finale, preserving Everton‘s unbeaten start to the Premier League season and sparking wild celebrations among the home support.
For Manchester United, the late collapse means they have now conceded two or more goals in each of their opening three league matches a defensive struggle the club has experienced just twice in the last 50 years.
