Search Underway For Missing Miami Gardens Police K-9 Struck By Car

Missing Police K-9 Search Continues

Authorities in Miami Gardens are continuing to search for a police K-9 named Gael after the dog ran from its handler Monday night and was later captured on surveillance video being struck by a vehicle. The incident began at approximately 9:35 p.m. Monday in the 200 block of Northwest 195th Street in Miami Gardens. Officers were responding to a business alarm when Gael was released from a patrol vehicle. According to police, Gael ran eastbound across Northwest Second Avenue after leaving the vehicle. His handler attempted to call him back, but the K-9 did not respond to the commands and continued running away from the area. Officers immediately began searching for Gael. Miami Gardens police units canvassed the surrounding area, while the Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit assisted with an aerial search. Despite the coordinated effort, officers were initially unable to locate the missing K-9.

Surveillance Video Shows Dog Being Struck

The search became more concerning after investigators obtained surveillance footage showing Gael being struck by a vehicle. The video reportedly showed the dog continuing to run eastbound after the collision. Authorities have not confirmed the extent of Gael’s injuries or determined where he went after the vehicle struck him. Because Gael continued running following the impact, officers are concerned that he could be injured, frightened or disoriented and may have traveled farther from the location where he was struck. Police continue to search the surrounding area while following information that could help determine the K-9’s whereabouts.

Description Of Missing K-9

Gael is approximately 2.5 years old and weighs between 55 and 65 pounds. Police describe him as having beige-colored hair and brown eyes. At the time he went missing, Gael was wearing a collar with the words “Mama says I’m special.” Authorities are releasing the description and collar information to help residents identify him if he is spotted.

Community Asked To Help

Police are asking people who live or work in the surrounding area to remain alert for Gael. Anyone who sees a dog matching his description should contact authorities immediately. Residents are being advised not to chase the dog, particularly if he appears injured or frightened, because attempting to approach him could cause him to run farther away. Anyone with information about Gael’s location is asked to contact the Miami Gardens Police Department at 305-474-2100.

Search Remains Active

The search for Gael remains ongoing as authorities work to determine where the K-9 went after the collision. Police have not publicly confirmed the severity of any injuries and have not announced that Gael has been located. The circumstances surrounding the vehicle collision remain under investigation. Authorities have not indicated that the driver intentionally struck the K-9. For now, police are relying on continued searches, surveillance information and tips from the public in hopes of locating Gael and getting him back to his handler safely. Anyone who believes they have seen Gael is encouraged to report the sighting to police as quickly as possible.
