Giant Pandas Ping Ping And Fu Shuang Arrive In Atlanta

Two giant pandas have officially arrived at Zoo Atlanta, bringing the beloved animals back to the city nearly two years after its previous panda residents returned to China.

Male Ping Ping and female Fu Shuang arrived at Hartsfield Jackson Atlanta International Airport aboard a dedicated FedEx Boeing 777 known as the “Panda Express.” The pandas then traveled to Zoo Atlanta, where they are beginning the next stage of their stay in the United States.

The arrival came just days after Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that the two pandas would travel to Atlanta. Xi described the giant panda as an “envoy of friendship” between Chinese and American people and announced that Ping Ping and Fu Shuang would soon meet the American public.

Who Are Ping Ping And Fu Shuang?

Both pandas were born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China in 2020. Ping Ping was born on March 17, while Fu Shuang was born on October 18.

Ping Ping is male and Fu Shuang is female. Their arrival represents the continuation of Zoo Atlanta’s longstanding giant panda partnership with Chinese conservation organizations.

The pandas were transported from China as part of an international conservation and research partnership focused on giant panda care, research and conservation.

Pandas Will Not Be On Display Yet

Visitors will have to wait before they can see the new arrivals.

Ping Ping and Fu Shuang are expected to spend approximately one month in quarantine inside a biosecure area of Zoo Atlanta’s giant panda complex. During that period, veterinarians and animal care specialists will monitor the pandas as they adjust to their new surroundings.

The quarantine process is a standard part of introducing animals to a new facility. It allows animal care teams to closely monitor their health while giving the pandas time to become familiar with their new environment.

Zoo Atlanta has not yet announced the pandas’ public debut date.

A Return Of Pandas To Atlanta

The arrival marks the return of giant pandas to Zoo Atlanta after its previous panda family left for China in October 2024.

Zoo Atlanta’s relationship with giant pandas began in 1999. Over the following 25 years, the zoo became home to several generations of the animals, including Lun Lun and Yang Yang.

Lun Lun and Yang Yang produced seven offspring at Zoo Atlanta between 2006 and 2016. The panda family eventually returned to China as part of the long running cooperative relationship between the United States and China.

Now, Ping Ping and Fu Shuang are beginning a new chapter for the zoo’s panda program.

Part Of A Conservation Partnership

The new pandas are coming to Atlanta through an international cooperative agreement between Zoo Atlanta and the China Wildlife Conservation Association.

The partnership supports giant panda conservation and research while allowing experts in both countries to collaborate on animal care and the preservation of the species.

Giant pandas remain closely associated with conservation efforts because of their specialized habitat and diet. Bamboo makes up the vast majority of their diet, requiring pandas in human care to receive carefully managed food and veterinary care.

Atlanta Welcomes Its Newest Residents

The arrival of Ping Ping and Fu Shuang gives Atlanta another opportunity to introduce visitors to one of the world’s most recognizable animals.

For now, the pandas will remain behind the scenes while they complete quarantine and settle into their new home. Once Zoo Atlanta determines that they are ready, the public will be able to see the pair in their new habitat.

Their arrival also marks the beginning of a new chapter in Atlanta’s decades long relationship with giant pandas and international wildlife conservation.
